Birthday Celebration: My Tot Clock Review and Giveaway (Closed)
May 19, 2009 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews | 181 Comments

If your a mommy or a daddy, then I know you can relate to the nightmare of sleep deprivation. My oldest is almost 6 and my youngest is turning 1. So basically you could say that I’ve been sleep deprived for 6 years. When I saw the opportunity to be able to use My Tot Clock, I knew I had to learn more about it.
A little about My Tot Clock from the website:
My Tot Clock is an all-in-one sleep aid, alarm clock, nightlight, and timer for children ages 2+. It teaches little ones when to sleep (blue light) and when it’s okay to get out of bed (yellow light). It also plays bedtime stories, lullabies, fun wake music, and even white noise (like ocean sounds)! As an added bonus, My Tot Clock has a light blue light for nap time, a red light for timeout, and a green light for any positive timed activity. Perfect for those young enough to start learning a daily routine, but not old enough to be able to tell time. Also great for their sleepy parents! Guaranteed better sleep or your money back!
Pamela Gonzales, a once sleep deprived mommy and the inventor of My Tot Clock, came up with the idea of the color coded clock 4 years ago when her oldest son was having problems staying in bed at night. He would wake up in the middle of night, not knowing what time it was, and would get up ready to start his day. Knowing that her son was not sure of the time, she knew her son needed one of those clocks. A clock that would change colors and let her son know that is was either okay or not okay to get out of bed. So she set out on a search for a color coded clock. Her searched returned no results. She vowed at that moment that we was going to invent it.
Pamela sent us a My Tot Clock to review and WOW, this thing is cool! It is a great size and comes with interchangeable face plates. I especially like this feature because when one child is done or has outgrown it, you can personalize it for the next child. Upon first inspection I thought it might be difficult to set up. So I had my husband do the initial setup. Although looking back at it now, I was silly. It’s very easy.
First you will need to set the time on both the digital clock on the back and the analog clock on the front. Once you set both of these they will remain in-sync. You will then need to set up the timers for both sleepy times and wake time. The clock will automatically go off at the programmed times. During sleep time, the clock will light up blue. To make the sleep routine more enjoyable, insert a Tot Clock Treasure cartridge that can play a story, followed by lullabies and can even play white noise. The lullabies and stories will shut off after 30 minutes, but you can set the white noise to run all night if need be. Another feature that is really cool is that you can manually override any of these timers.
When it is time wake up, the clock will light up yellow. If you need your child to wake at a certain time, insert a Tot Clock Treasure cartridge to play a fun wake up song. I will say that my daughter does not wake up to the music. I do wish there was a way to turn it up just a bit.
My Tot Clock also has a green encouragement timer. The encouragement timer is designed to be activated so that your child can start an encouragement activity. It is easily activated with just a touch of a button. You will need to set up the amount of time you want the timer to run. The encouragement timer can be used for so many activities. Use it while potty training. Have them sit on the toilet for a minute or so. When the timer turns back to yellow then they know they can get off the toilet.
Another feature of My Tot Clock is the red discipline timer. You can activate the discipline timer with just a touch of a button. You will need to set up the amount of time you want the timer to run. When the clock turns from red to yellow, then your child will know that timeout is over.
Each Tot Clock Treasure cartridge comes with a great story plus soothing lullabies, a wake up song, and white noise.
Buy It: My Tot Clock retails for $49.99 and can be purchased from authorized retailers or directly from the My Tot Clock website. My Tot Clock comes with the “Welcome to Children’s Dreamland” Tot Clock Treasure cartridge, the “Night Sky” Faceplate, AC Adapter, and 4 AA Batteries.

My favorite tip is how to turn off the sound. Simply click the button on the top of My Tot Clock that corresponds to the current color and the sound will stop. For example, if the wake music is playing, click the yellow button; if the lullabies are playing (during naptime), click the light blue button; and if the story is playing (during bedtime), click the dark blue button. The sound will immediately stop. To re-start the sound from the beginning, hold the corresponding buttons down for 5 seconds.

A short story? My daughter is 2 and a half and has not slept through an entire night yet. She wakes up frequently and always always wants mom or dad. Naps are the same story. I don’t even like typing it. That is how tired I am of this. I need this, I think probably more than my dear little Lucy!

This Clock would be great in letting my kids (18mo & 3) when they’re obeying and when they’re not. It’d also help my 3 year old not be afraid of the dark when it’s bed time, which has became difficult this past year.

My favorite tip is to let your child pick the story you plug in. I read an article somewhere (can’t remember where) about giving your child choices, instead of telling them to do something. It had some great points and I wish I knew where I read it now!
Whitney on May 19th, 2009 1:50 pm
My son is only 5 months old, but he has his Daddy’s energy. He would stay up and play until midnight if you’d let him. We wrestle with sleep most nights and we were just having a conversation about this last night. Hubby said that we are really in for it when he becomes mobile!

My son just turned 3. Although he’s finally getting better at going to bed, he often comes into our room in the middle of the night or way too early in the morning. One of our biggest challenges is teaching him that in the summer, he can’t use the sun as his cue as to whether it’s bedtime or wake-up time.

My favorite tip: What if my child tries to stay awake until the yellow light turns on?
Children are so fascinated with the “magical” changing of the lights that they may want to stay awake to see My Tot Clock go from blue to yellow. For the first few nights, set the Wake Music to ON and let your child know that the clock will wake them up when the color changes. They won’t miss a thing!

Absolutely! By using the switches on the back of the clock, you can create a bedtime and waketime routine that is perfect for your child. You can play a bedtime story only; lullabies only; story + lullabies; story + lullabies + white noise…it’s all up to you!

My Tot Clock is a great tool to help your child sleep through the night in their own bed, but it can’t do it alone. You will need to spend some time teaching your child about the blue light and the yellow light. Make sure they know that the blue light means nighty-night, and they can’t get out of bed or call out until the yellow light turns on. The pretty blue light and the extra bedtime story are great motivators to get your child interested in getting in their bed and turning out the lights. Give them lots of encouragement and a great big goodnight kiss. If they call out, ask them to tell you what color the light is. If they say “blue,” reinforce that the blue light means they should be sleeping. Continue to reinforce the concept without giving in! You can do it!

Most useful tip: When adding time to your child’s waketime, it’s best to add in 15 minute increments. Your child’s internal clock is mighty powerful, so if adding a full hour (for example on a Saturday morning), let your child know that it’s a sleep-in day and their yellow light will turn on later than normal. Otherwise, they might wake up, get impatient, and ask why their yellow light isn’t turning on! Set your rules ahead of time. For example, if they wake up early, you may want them to play quietly in their room until the yellow light turns on. I LOVE THIS FEATURE!!

My favorite tip is How to reboot the Totclock! My Tot Clock works off a microprocessor that may need to be restarted from time-to-time. If the clock begins to act in unexpected ways or turns off entirely, simply unplug and remove the batteries for 30 – 60 seconds. When you replace the batteries, the clock will reboot and you’ll be back in business! That is good to know!

This thing has it all, doesn’t it. I love the white noise feature because my little one sleeps more than the older kids and the noise in our small home wakes her up too much, so white noise would help with that.

One helpful tip is that as long as you have batteries installed in My Tot Clock, it will continue to work even if the lights go out.

The On/Off button on the back of My Tot Clock is designed to turn off the lights and sounds, but the clock will continue to keep time. If you need to turn the clock off entirely (for example, if traveling on an airplane), you will need to remove the batteries.

What if my child tries to stay awake until the yellow light turns on?
Children are so fascinated with the “magical” changing of the lights that they may want to stay awake to see My Tot Clock go from blue to yellow. For the first few nights, set the Wake Music to ON and let your child know that the clock will wake them up when the color changes. They won’t miss a thing!

Short story you want eh?:
Once upon a time there was a prince who wouldn’t sleep in his own bed. He wanted to sleep with the king and queen. The king and queen desperately tried everything but the little prince would not sleep on his own. The prince was ensuring his place as the last child. Then one day a mom with magic clock came into town. The king and queen wanted this clock. Would it finally get the prince to sleep in his own bed?

How do I dim the blue light?
The blue light has 5 levels of illumination and can also be turned off entirely without impacting the rest of the clock functions. Use the Blue Light Dimmer on the back of the clock to select the level that works best for your child.

I wish I had paid attention to the tip “Say Goodnight and Exit the Room.” Looks like the clock would help not only the child, but a parent like me as well, who is tempted to stay longer than she should! If the light is blue, mommy should exit the room!

I desperately need this clock because my son comes into my room in the middle of the night many nights, making himself comfortable in our bed. And he is a close-sleeper while I hate to be touched in my sleep. If he could learn to sleep all night every night in his own bed, I would be the happiest woman alive.

“What if I need to wake my child up sooner than the waketime?
The creators of My Tot Clock are parents too, and we understand that sometimes “life happens!” If you need to wake your little one sooner than their regular waketime, just sneak into their room and hold down the yellow button on the top of the clock for 5 seconds to manually start the wake routine. The yellow light will turn on and the wake music will begin (if selected).”
Cassandra on June 2nd, 2009 12:08 pm
You will need to spend some time teaching your child about the blue light and the yellow light. Make sure they know that the blue light means nighty-night, and they can’t get out of bed or call out until the yellow light turns on.

When first using My Tot Clock, set the waketime to your child’s normal waketime and set the Wake Music to On. When your child wakes in the morning to the yellow light and fun music, give lots of praise! Singing and dancing helps, too!
