My Virtual Tutor: Reading for Nintendo DS Review and Giveaway (Closed)

With Christmas just a few shorts week away, I’m sure many are looking for presents for children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc.  My two oldest children who are only 6 and 3 are really into electronics and enjoy playing the Nintendo DS.  So as you can imagine, DS games are on their Christmas lists. When I received the opportunity to review My Virtual Tutor: Reading, I was excited to let my children try it out.  Since Taylor is in the first grade, I chose the 1st grade-2nd grade series.

my virtual tutor gameMy Virtual Tutor: Reading is a series of educational interactive electronic learning tools and is the only educational game that tests and improves comprehension in addition to reading skills.  My Virtual Tutor: Reading helps children strengthen early reading through learning exercises and interactive books.  Mentor InterActive, Inc., the children’s interactive “edutainment” company is entering the educational products and services market with this new product line.

When we received our review copy of the game, my daughter Taylor was really excited to try it out.  She is one of those children who loves to go to school and it totally devastates her if she had to miss a day.

When you start the game you can choose one of four different play modes:

  • Read To Me: Tutor reads story with engaging animation
  • I Can Read: Beginning vocabulary word-based activities
  • Interactive: Clickable animations with interactive quizzes to test reading and vocabulary comprehension
  • Paint: Unleash creativity and illustrate scenes while listening to a story

Taylor started out with the Read To Me option and enjoyed listening to the tutor and watching the animation on the screen of the DS.  One of the first things that I noticed was you have to hold the DS vertically like a book rather than like you would normally hold while playing a game.  The Tutor’s voice is clear and easy to understand.

The more Taylor played, the more she wanted to try out on the game.  There are many activities for the player to do.  Taylor really like the Paint option.  She was able to create her own little masterpiece while listening to the story.

As a mommy I appreciate that my children are learning as they are playing on the DS.  My Virtual Tutor: Reading is available is 3 different series depending on reading ability.

  • Pre-K – Kindergarten: Curriculum focuses on letter and sound recognition, shapes, colors and counting.
  • Kindergarten – 1st Grade: Curriculum focuses on sounds blending, rhyme, patterns, and vowel recognition.
  • 1st Grade – 2nd Grade: Curriculum focuses on sight word reading and spelling.

Overall I really like the My Virtual Tutor: Reading series and so does Taylor.  It keeps her entertained and she is learning at the same time.  I do think the price is a little steep.  I usually don’t purchase video games if they cost over $20.
