September is National Pet Health Insurance Month + Giveaway (Closed)

As if you couldn’t tell by my title, September is National Pet Health Insurance Month.  This is actually the second annual celebration of pet health insurance month in the United States as pet insurance is becoming more and more popular. If you are one of the nation’s 70 million pet owners, you know that your pet is an important part of the family.  It’s not like when I was growing up and the dogs stayed outside and weren’t allowed in the house. My little dachshund is a spoiled little guy and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, what happens when your pet gets sick or injured?  I’m sure many of us would spend whatever it took to make sure our little furry friends were taken care of even if it meant shelling out some major cash.  Thankfully, my little guy hasn’t had any major illnesses but just normal check-ups and vaccinations can pretty much break the bank.  To help offset some of these costs, more pet owners than ever are are signing up for pet health insurance plans. Not sure where to get pet health insurance? Kroger offers pet health insurance through PetFirst Healthcare and can save pet owners up to 90 percent on their bill.

If you’ve never considered pet health insurance for your furry friend, now is probably as good a time as ever.  Here are some tips to keep in mind as you’re considering your pet health insurance policy.

Get the coverage you want. Take the time to review what policies are available. Some carriers, like Kroger and PetFirst Healthcare, offer accident-only coverage, which pet owners may find more attractive than a premium coverage plan which costs more per month. Pet owners should examine how much they’re willing to spend on the monthly premium and match that with the benefits of each plan.

Buy early. Most, if not all pet insurance providers will refuse a pet with a pre-existing condition. Just like in humans, a pre-existing condition means the pet was diagnosed with an illness or disease prior to seeking pet insurance. It’s best to seek coverage from Day 1 to avoid the possibility of a pre-existing condition.

Know your coverage. Not all treatments will be covered, and what’s covered varies from policy to policy. Because pet owners pay out-of-pocket and then file a claim for reimbursement, some pet owners may not know a treatment isn’t covered until their claim is denied. Avoid that scenario by knowing the coverage benefits before walking into a vet’s clinic.

I know economic times are hard for pretty much everyone right now and thinking about a health insurance policy for your pet is an extra added expense.  But, Kroger and PetFirst Healthcare have options for pretty much every budget like the accident-only pet insurance.

I like the accident plan, but wow I think any of them would be beneficial with the high costs of vet care.

The comprehensive senior plan would be good, but it looks like if your pet has a pre-existing condition, insurance will not deal with that particular condition.

I think the Preferred Plan looks good. I had a Bichon Frise who was diabetic. We dropped $25K in medical expenses, insulin supplies, etc. over the span of his illness. Sure wish I had pet insurance then.
