ThermaCELL Mosquito Repelling Lantern Review
July 30, 2010 | Filed Under Reviews | Leave a Comment
Living out in the country surrounded by trees and ponds, we get our fair share of those pesky little flying insects. It seems like the hot humid weather along with all the trees and bushes and adding in the ponds is perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. I was recently sent a ThermaCELL Mosquito Repelling Lantern and I was super excited to give it a try.
Setting up the lantern does involve a few steps and I’d highly suggest you read the directions. The lantern does require 4AA batteries that are NOT included. The first step is to remove the battery cover on the bottom of the lantern and insert your batteries. The batteries should provide light for 200 hours on the low setting and 150 hours on the high setting. The second step is to place one ThermaCELL mat on the grill on the top of the lantern. One mat will last a maximum of 4 hours and you can tell when the repellent has been exhausted when the mat turns a pale blue. Make sure the ON/OFF button is in the OFF position before you put the mat on because the grill will get hot very quickly.
After you have your mat in place, you will need to remove the top of the lantern from the base by squeezing the latch tabs on the bottom and gently pulling up. Take the butane cartridge and remove the top. You will then need to screw the cartridge into the center of the lantern clockwise until it stops and then replace the lantern back onto the base. One butane cartridge will last a maximum of 12 hours.
The ThermaCELL Mosquito Repelling Lantern can be used as a mosquito repellent as well as just a lantern. You can use the lantern on a low light setting and a high light setting just by flipping a switch on the base of the lantern. To activate the mosquito repellent you will need to turn the switch to the “ON” position and wait approximately 5 to 10 seconds before pressing the button 3 to 5 times pretty quickly. You can then verify the mosquito repellent is working by looking in the circular hole in the top of the lantern. If you see an orange light, then your lantern is working properly.
I know it looks like there are many steps, but setting up the lantern is actually pretty easy. It only took me a few minutes and it was up and running in no time. I’ve used many mosquito repelling products including spray, bracelets, candles, etc. and the thing that I absolutely hate is the scent they put off. The ThermaCELL Mosquito Repelling Lantern doesn’t really smell at all and it still works! The only precaution is that if you have small children, keep this out of their reach. The grill gets extremely hot, I know because I touched it just to see, and it will burn. This product is to be used outdoors and one lantern will cover a 15′ x 15′ area.
All in all I highly recommend this product. It doesn’t make any noise, it’s portable so if you move it can go with you and it works! If you love to be outdoors but are bound indoors by mosquitoes, I’d definitely give this a try.
Buy:
The ThermaCELL Mosquito Repelling Lantern is available to purchase for $31.99.

SkinCareRX Personal Microderm System Review and Giveaway
July 29, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews, Skin Care | 78 Comments
What most people don’t know about me is that I’m very self-conscious about my skin. Growing up and even now I suffer from acne and my face has always been what’s held me back so to speak. Over the last couple of years I’ve noticed that my face needed a deep down cleansing or spa treatment because of dead skin cells but that isn’t something that I’m willing to spends hundreds of dollars on. I was recently contacted by SkinCareRx to see if I wanted to review the Personal Microderm System and I’m sure you can imagine my excitement when it arrived at my doorstep. I was like a little girl at Christmas as I opened the box and pictured what I hoped the system would do for my face.
The Personal Microderm System includes:
- 1 Personal Microderm
- 6 exfoliating discs (2 green and 4 blue)
- 1 electric cord (Standard U.S. Outlet)
- 1 facial cap
- 1 body cap
- 1 reusable filter
- Instructional DVD
- Pamphlet
Since receiving the SkinCareRX Personal Microderm System, I’ve been able to use it twice. I would have liked to use it more, but the instructions say that once a week usage is ideal and I’ve only had it for two weeks. To be honest, I was quite nervous about using it but after watching the DVD that comes with the system, I felt confident enough to give it a try.
The Personal Microderm System is practically a personal microdermabrasion treatment without the cost of a professional treatment and the hand-held device uses the same aluminum oxide crystals that the professionals use. There is a learning curve in using the Personal Microderm System but watching the instructional DVD gives you all you need to use it correctly. I did a short little video using the system so you could see just how easy it is.
I’ve never really been one to use product on my face, besides a cleanser, because I’ve always had problems with acne. I think because of that my skin was desperate for some tender-loving care. After just one use of the Personal Microderm System, my face was noticeably smoother to the touch. My skin even looked a bit healthier. I’ve never had any professional treatments done and after using this system, I don’t think I’ll have to. My acne has seemed to improve in just the short 2 weeks I’ve been using the system. I’m looking forward to what the next few weeks will bring while using the system.
The system comes with two different size discs, one for the face and one for the body. I’ve only used the system on my face so I’ve only used the smaller discs. Even with the small disc, I find it hard to get around and on my nose. The system can’t get a good suction so therefore it doesn’t really work correctly in that area. Another thing to point out is the discs are only good for 2-3 uses.
I’m loving the SkinCareRX Personal Microderm System and I’m totally amazed at what it has done for my skin so far. If you’re looking for home microdermabrasion kits, I’d definitely recommend this one!

I Got Punked – Wanchai Ferry Style
July 28, 2010 | Filed Under Reviews | 4 Comments
A month or so ago my husband and I were invited to attend a special dinner courtesy of My Blog Spark. Last Wednesday was the special night and we headed across town to a pretty quaint little restaurant, Shanghai River. We arrived full of excitement to meet other bloggers and to have a night all by ourselves minus the children and enjoy a nice Chinese entree.
We enjoyed a nice soup and appetizer and the entree followed shortly after. I ordered Spicy Garlic Chicken and while it wasn’t to spicy, it was very tasty. We proceeded to get dessert but I’m not really a fan of fried bananas, so I passed. One of my favorite parts of eating at a Chinese restaurant happens to be the fortune cookie. When opening the fortune cookie, my husband gave me a really weird look and asked if I had read mine. To my surprise, this is what was inside.
To say I was surprised was an understatement. After looking back I should have been able to put everything together, but My Blog Spark had invited me to an appreciation dinner so why would I think differently. The camera crew, signing release forms, waiter having a hard time with entrees…it should have been very clear that something was up.
I was quite pleased with my Wanchai Ferry Spicy Garlic Chicken. Like I mentioned earlier, there wasn’t enough spice to call it spicy, but the meal was really quite tasty. The water chestnuts were really crunchy and tasty and not mushy like some other frozen entrees I’ve tried. I actually ate my entire plate which was actually supposed to be for 2 people. That should pretty much tell you just how much I enjoyed it.
I got punked, but Ashton didn’t show up….bummer!
My Blog Spark provided me with a free dinner and a gift card for my time but that in no way influences my opinions.
Playtime Fun With Zubels Eco-Friendly Hand Knit Toys
July 26, 2010 | Filed Under Reviews | 3 Comments
I can’t tell you how many cutesy little toys I’ve bought for my children over the years, but I can tell you none of them have been eco-friendly or made with organic material. When my oldest was born, organic and eco-friendly wasn’t really that big of a deal and I didn’t quite understand it all and then my son came along and he just played with the toys my daughter already had minus a few that family members bought when he was born. By the time we made it to the third child, we had so many hand-me-downs that I don’t think we really bought anything new for him. I know what you’re thinking, but I promise you, the boy has an endless supply of toys.
Now that I understand more about why eco-friendly and organic materials are better, I was excited to get my youngest son a couple Zubels eco-friendly hand knit toys. His little face lit up when I showed him his two new toys. He was full of hugs and kisses and made his new toys feel right at home.
Zubels has recently launched their new line of sea inspired 100% organic cotton hand knit characters. The vibrantly colored sea creatures are hand knit with 100% super soft organic cotton yarns colored with eco-friendly dyes. If you’re really not into sea creatures, Zubels also has seasonal characters as well as cute little safari animals, sport stars, and more! All Zubels toys are safety tested and are safe for ages from birth and up. One thing that really stood out to me and is a huge plus is that although Zubels are heirloom quality toys, the 100% super soft organic cotton knit characters also wash beautifully and are budget friendly.
I’m incredibly happy with the quality and construction of Zubels Eco-Friendly Hand Knit Toys. With many designs to choose from, there is something for everyone. The rattles are super adorable and I’ll be getting a couple for my nephew that should be here in November. The frog, “Zu-per” Freddy, you see pictured above with my son is part of the Long Arms line and the arms measure 13″ across making it easy to tie onto strollers, cribs and car seats. The head jingles and the arms crinkle making it a perfect distraction for a bored baby. The lion, Leonard “My Mane Man”, is adorable as can be and his head rattles.
About Zubels:
Family owned Renzo Company Inc., has committed themselves to creating eco-friendly toys to be cherished and loved by children of all ages. Renzo Company, which has been in business for over 30 years, offers traditional, eco-friendly, hand knit toys, quality gifts, accessories and apparel which are available at various boutiques and online retailers.

Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream Review and Giveaway
July 25, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews | 67 Comments
Here in Texas we get some super hot weather for pretty much most of the year. We try to do our best to keep cool and one way we do that is with ice cream. Thanks to Mom Central, I was sent free product coupons so that I could try Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream and some of you will be able to win one so you can try them too. Pretty cool, right?!?
I sent the hubby out to the store with our free product coupon and let him make the decision which Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream he would bring home. With six rich and creamy flavors to choose from, I didn’t want to make that decision. Flavors include Chocolate Caramel Brownie, Vanilla Caramel Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Vanilla Fudge Brownie, and Triple Chocolate Chip plus sandwiches which are always my first choice. I was happy to see he chose the Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Vanilla Fudge Brownie sandwiches.
These lovely little creations of goodness were not in my house more than a hour before I had to dig in. Seriously, they are delicious. What is even more incredible is that there are only 160 calories and 4 grams of fat per sandwich. I thought about just eating two and making a meal out of it. Okay, not really, well really, but I had to talk myself out of it. The fudge brownie complimented the smooth, creamy ice cream so nicely. My only complaint is that the sandwich isn’t bigger. It was gone before I knew it.

Imaginative Play with Pop On Pals
July 25, 2010 | Filed Under Reviews | 2 Comments
Since I’m a mom of three young children, I have to buy toys. Some toys will end up being a worthwhile investment, while others will quickly end up in the trash. I was excited to be introduced to the brand new world of Pop On Pals through my affiliation with Team Mom. I have two young boys who love toys (what kid doesn’t) and as a mommy I love toys that bring some sort of value in terms of imaginative play and helping them develop their fine motor skills.
We received the Amusement Park Play Set that includes one pal, three park themed easy pop-on rings, one amusement park with lights and sounds and hours of play. *One major warning – if you have more than one child, get more than one pal. I think it will make for a better experience for all involved.* My hubby is the ultimate engineer when it comes to assembling toys so the boys watched patiently as daddy was taking everything out of the package.
Peyton and Rylan had to oversee the operation to make sure daddy was doing everything correctly.
The hardest part of putting the amusement park together was actually just getting it out of the box. All the ties that hold it in are a booger to get loose. Once my husband got it put together, it was time to begin playing.
The amusement park has five different action points that provide many different activities for your child to do on just one toy. Your Pop On Pal has interchangeable pop-on rings that allow you to easily change your Pop On Pal to do the action points of the amusement park. From showing off your strength at the strong man striker, to riding the roller coaster, playing milk toss, swinging and riding the ferris wheel, this ultimate amusement park provides loads of fun.
Pop On Pals is recommended for children ages 2-4, and also includes pets, vehicles and endless mix n’ match “Popabilities.” There are quite a few Pop On Pals packs and play sets to choose from. My children are enjoying the amusement park, I just hope I can keep up with all the pieces.
Oh, and the website is adorable! I had fun under the “play” tab coloring online.
Buy:
Pop On Pals are available at Toys “R” Us, Target, Kmart, Sears and more. The Pop On Pals Amusement Park Play Set retails for $34.99.

JumpStart: Get Moving Family Fitness for the Wii Review and Giveaway
July 19, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews | 115 Comments
My children are big gamer kids. We have multiple gaming systems and in their spare time, if they aren’t playing outside, they’re enjoying indoor playtime on a gaming console. One of the consoles we play most of our family games on is the Wii because it seems like the children enjoy it more and the games seem to be more family friendly. We recently received a review copy of JumpStart’s newest game release, Get Moving featuring Brooke Burke.
First off, the last thing a mommy with a few extra pounds around the waist wants to see is a perfectly slender, adorable Brooke Burke when she turns on the TV. Am I right mommies?
When you first start playing the game everyone will have the opportunity to create their character. This part was really fun for my children. You get to choose eye color, hair color, etc. Once everyone has created their characters you can begin playing the game.
I played with my daughter and we went on a race on the beach. The running part was easy, it was the trying to jump the hurdles that was difficult. No matter what I tried, I just couldn’t get it right. We also played Dodge Ball on the beach and that one was really pretty easy. We then played Volleyball on the beach and while I thought it was easy, my daughter had a hard time with this one with the whole hand and eye coordination.
Since my children are a bit young for this game, I like that you can also play the game solo. The game features 15 sports challenges that you can play in 11 exotic arenas. Since I don’t go to the beach very often, I always play on the beach. Before each game the lovely Brooke Burke will demonstrate how to play. This is really helpful for the children.
I enjoyed playing Get Moving but I don’t think it’s a game for young children. My 4 and 7 year old children had a pretty difficult time and it caused more frustration than fun. If your children are older and they’ve played similar games then I think it should be okay.

How About Pizza for Breakfast – Eggo Real Fruit Pizza Review
July 19, 2010 | Filed Under Reviews | 5 Comments
I’m a huge fan of Eggo Waffles and pretty much almost every morning I have 2 Eggo Chocolate Chip Waffles. When chocolate and waffles meet, it really is just divine. When I was given the opportunity to participate in the Mom Central Eggo Real Fruit Pizza Blog Tour, I was excited to try the new Eggo product. I received a sample of each variety, Eggo Real Fruit Pizza Strawberry Granola and Eggo Real Fruit Pizza Mixed Berry Granola.
When I opened one of my Eggo Real Fruit Pizza’s, my “crust” was broken in a couple of places and made it hard to take out of the package. Once I was able to get all of the pieces on the cooking tray, I placed it in the microwave and cooked it for 1 minute. Once I opened the microwave I got a nice whiff of berry goodness.
The “crust” is my favorite part of the pizza. I like the blueberries and raspberries, I just think there are too many on such a small pizza. The berries really over-powered the rest of the ingredients. I like how fast and easy the Eggo Real Fruit Pizza is to make and the overall taste was good. Just don’t get a bite full of berries
I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Eggo Real Fruit Pizza and received a sample of the product and a $20 Amazon gift certificate to facilitate my review.
Nature Valley Granola Thins Review and Giveaway
July 16, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews | 129 Comments
If you were to look inside my pantry at any given time, I’m sure you’d spot at least one box of Nature Valley Granola Bars. When I was asked if I’d like to try the new Nature Valley Granola Thins I happily said yes and stalked the UPS and FedEx guys until it finally showed up.
Nature Valley Granola Thins come in two different varieties which include dark chocolate and peanut butter. After trying both varieties, my favorite is the dark chocolate! These 100% natural granola squares are quite delicate and have a texture much like a graham cracker rather than the granola bar. The bottom of each granola thin is layered with either creamy peanut butter or decadent dark chocolate. Each square is individually wrapped and only contains 80 calories per square. These have become my new favorite low calorie snack! Hey, even the kids like them.
If you are a fan of granola then I really think you will love these. Each box contains 10 individually wrapped granola thins but somehow all mine disappeared.
I also wanted to share with you a recipe for a classic campfire favorite using Nature Valley Granola Thins – S’Mores!
Follow these easy steps to make S’Mores with Granola Thins.
1) Roast marshmallow over open flame until it turns golden brown.
2) Select two dark chocolate Granola Thins. Try (the peanut butter flavor as a tasty alternative. You can even use one of each!
3) Place the marshmallow inside the two thins, granola side out, and enjoy!
Buy:
You can purchase Nature Valley Granola Thins for around $3.59 per box depending on your market. At the Walmart SuperCenter by me they are only $2.88 per box.
Giveaway:
One (1) winners will receive a Nature Valley Granola Thins Prize Pack that includes a nature-inspired mug, mouse pad, desk calendar and both Nature Valley Granola Thins varieties!

Baby GoGo Baby Doll Review and Giveaway
July 16, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Reviews | 95 Comments
Over the last 7 years we’ve had our fair share of baby dolls in this house. All of the dolls that my daughter currently has are all girl dolls just based on clothing and hair. Since we do have 2 boys in the house, they play with sissy’s dolls but we never even thought about buying a boy doll or unisex doll because quite frankly it hasn’t been a problem and my boys don’t mind playing with the girl dolls. But I was recently introduced to Baby GoGo, a doll by Little Sib, that is basically a non-gender specific doll. The doll is clothed in gender neutral clothing, has no hair and is designed so that both boys and girls will feel comfortable playing with it.
Like I mentioned earlier, my boys have no problem playing with girly dolls so there wasn’t much of a need for a gender neutral doll. However, I do think it may be a good idea if you have a boy who will not play with a girly doll.
The doll itself is a pretty standard 13″ doll appropriate for toddlers and preschool children. It is a tad darker than most of the dolls we already have which is a nice change. The eyes open and close and the legs and arms are move-able only at the shoulder and hip joints. The torso is soft and fills like it’s filled with soft material. As you can see from the pictures above, the doll comes with a hat, sleepy time outfit and a soft blanket that is attached to the outfit. I like the blanket being attached so I don’t have to worry about it getting lost.
We also received the coordinating diaper bag and it was a big hit with my daughter. She’s the one that really plays with the diaper bag but she uses it as a purse…go figure. It’s made of 100% cotton canvas and also includes a little cotton diaper for baby. It’s not a must have to enjoy the new baby, but it is a cute accessory.
I think the Baby GoGo Baby Doll is really cute and my children enjoy playing with it. The book, Baby GoGo Goes Home, that comes with the doll is an adorable little read. I do think the price tag is a little high for my liking but that’s probably just because I’m frugal.
Buy:
You can purchase the Baby GoGo Baby Doll for $39.99 and the coordinating diaper bag for $24.99 online or at your local specialty toy shop.
