The Voices Behind Brave

The much anticipated Pixar film Brave has finally hit the theaters. It’s been a long few months waiting to finally see Merida on the big screens!

Merida with her bow and arrowThis past week I had the opportunity to attend the Premiere of Brave in LA and while I was there had the opportunity to interview some of the voice talent featured in the film. The lovely Kelly MacDonald was as beautiful as ever, the hilarious Craig Ferguson was incredibly funny and the handsome Kevin McKidd was as dreamy as I thought he’d be. They all provided us with some great information and I’m going to share just a couple of the questions and answers as to not overwhelm you.

Question to Kelly MacDonald: Is it more difficult to get into character for an animated film versus live action like “Harry Potter”?

It’s sort of harder in some respects because I think costumes, hair and makeup really help. When you look in the mirror and you can see your character, the way she looks, it kinda helps. It definitely felt easier to be that character when I was in the costume. I felt a bit idiotic sort of in my jeans and just trying to be some sort of medieval ghost. So I think that it is quite challenging. But, I do enjoy voice work. And it was challenging because everything in animation has to be that much bigger. And I couldn’t get away with telling the story with a facial expression. The animators do that for you so well, better than you ever could. Everything had to be through your voice and everything had to be projected that bit more. And there’s the bit in the trailer where…in the archery contest, and she’s going for the third bulls eye. There’s that moment where she takes a breath…and that breath…they were like, “More. More. Let’s do it more.” It felt like I was really doing too much, but that’s the way it has to be for animation.

Question for Craig Ferguson: Do you find it more difficult to get into character when you’re doing a voice over?

I used to hate doing my own voice when I was younger…because I was quite a shy boy and stuff. And that’s why I started acting, because I was really shy. As soon as my dad put on a character or a voice I could like suddenly not be shy anymore.

Question to Kevin McKidd: Were there any visual cues they gave you in the room to help you feel the part more like?

Yeah, they did. They show you the whole film…but it’s all like paints of sketches? So, you sat there for about an hour and a half and they talk the whole film to you…but it’s all like just literally white paper and pencil sketches, and some of it’ll move a little bit. And that was interesting just to see that part of the process.

Question to Craig Ferguson and Kevin McKidd: What is your favorite Disney movie?

Kevin McKidd: Aristocrats
Craig Ferguson: Wall-E

I always love sitting in on these interviews and learning more about the film and the actors/actresses. It seems with each interview, you really see a more personal side of the talent. I guess I’m not the only one who enjoys the interviews. Craig Ferguson mentioned our interview on his show.

I was invited to Los Angeles as a guest of Disney and Pixar. Most of my expenses were paid and all opinions are my own.

Love seeing the voiced behind the animated characters. Disney always puts a little of them into in the animation.
