I wish I knew then what I know now about using credit cards. I’m sure there are many that feel the same way. Credit cards, if not used in a smart way, can lead many into a pit of debt that is so terribly hard to crawl out of. But, if credit cards are used correctly, you can turn everyday spending into big rewards.

Turn Everyday Spending into Big Rewards

One thing to remember is that not all credit cards are create equal. There are credit cards that offer rewards, cash back, miles, and even money off designated retailers just by using their card on your everyday purchases. By using a credit card, earning some type of incentive, and paying off the balance each month, you can reap the benefits of smart credit card usage.

Not sure which credit card is right for you – compare credit card offers and choose one that is right for you. Decide what type of rewards you want to earn to help you choose the right credit card. Through innovative tools, experiences and advice, CreditCards.com helps people find the right cards and use them the right way — everyday. Important note: steer clear from credit cards with a yearly fee. There are plenty of credit cards available where you can earn rewards without a yearly fee.

I love credit cards that offer me cash back for my spending. My parents love credit cards that earn them miles for their travels. It’s a very personal choice and knowing exactly what you want to achieve is vital in choosing which credit card is right for you.

I like to pay for Christmas with the money I’ve earned on everyday spending throughout the year. My Discover card offers me cashback on ALL my purchases and bonus cashback on certain spending categories each quarter. This quarter is restaurants. Each time I go out to eat and use my Discover credit card, I earn a 5% cashback bonus. It’s spending I was already doing anyways, but by using my credit card, and paying the balance when the bill comes due, I’m actually earning money for using my credit card. That’s a total win in my book!

What is great about the cashback option with Discover is that I can use the cashback money I earn to pay for my Amazon purchases, use it to pay towards my balance due, and use it to redeem for gift cards to a variety of stores, restaurants, etc. I use the money I earn to either pay my bill after Christmas and/or pay for the Christmas gifts I order through Amazon.

It sure does make spending less guilty when it pays for Christmas — just sayin’.

The key to using your credit card for YOUR advantage is to spend wisely and ALWAYS pay off your balance when the payment is due. I can not stress this enough. NEVER put purchases on your credit card that you can not pay off when the bill comes due. If you have to pay a finance charge, it totally defeats the purpose of using your credit card to turn everyday spending into big rewards.

If being able to turn everyday spending into big rewards is something you would like to do, CreditCards.com rates and reviews credit cards to provide objective, useful comparative information to help you choose the right card for you. Do some research to find the perfect credit card for YOU!

I LOVE this! I only use credit cards that offer me rewards. I try to save them for Christmas so I can save more money. The holidays can add up so quickly!

  2. 2

Excellent post! We have one credit card account for emergency purchases. When they kick in the points for things (they do double points several times a year) we put ALL our expenses on the card and pay it off each week. Then we really rack up those points!

  3. 3

I’ve thought about trying this because I am scared I will not pay off the credit card. How do you discipline yourself to do it, because I want to try it?

  4. 4

I have a credit card that I earn rewards on. I love getting the gift cards to use especially around the holidays!

  5. 5

We pay mostly with credit cards for the rewards. I also use things like eBates when shopping online.

  6. 6

We mostly use our grocery store credit card and then we get cash back! I am hoping one day I can qualify for an Airline Credit Card here in Norway so I can rack up the miles!

  7. 7

Great advice. We do not have the rewards here in Eastern Europe but I remember when I was in the States I bought so many tickets with my Airline Miles.

  8. 8

Such great tips! I’m all about maximizing credit card rewards! I have paid for entire vacations this way.

It is always great to earn cashback rewards or frequent flyer miles when I use my credit card. Add discount coupons or vouchers to the mix and I’m actually saving a lot!

WE use a southwest card to get miles. I would never use a card that didnt offer miles. Its almost irresponsible.

  13. 13

We have made a decision not to use credit cards. I do like the idea of saving money on what I normally spend though.

  14. 14

I don’t have a credit card but this sounds great! I’ll have to look into it, the holidays always sneak up on me!

Cards with rewards sound so tempting! I don’t have a credit card though and sorta like the idea that I don’t have debt.
