I don’t like grocery shopping, period. It’s one of those things that you cannot bypass and is an integral part in caring for your family. That said, I still don’t like it. Unless you only have a couple of items to get, 1-2 hours can go by with your child complaining of boredom, going back to things you forgot, and trying to compare prices on everything. It would be so great if you could just order it all online and then someone else bring it to your house. Oh wait – you can!
I was always a bit nervous using Safeway.com Home Grocery Delivery as it made me feel kind of lazy and a bit snooty. After all, I really had no reason to not go to the store myself to the extent that I could justify it. Since the opportunity came up, I decided to give it a try. I put my order together and scheduled a delivery time for the next day.
As I wondered when the truck was going to come, I received a call from the driver letting me know the deliveries were running a bit behind. Upon arrival he was very apologetic as he explained that a shopper had called in sick and that threw off their whole department. Understandable. Things do come up and I appreciate that the driver was considerate enough to call and let me know. He did, by the way, arrive before the time he quoted to me.
All the groceries were already bagged and put in crates with my information on them. The delivery man (sorry I forgot his name) merely had to pull one crate out of the side of the truck, one from the refrigerated part in the rear, and one from the freezer section. He popped them on a dolly and brought them up to my porch. He asked me where I wanted them and I asked to just put them near the front door. It took all of 10 minutes – I could NEVER get out the brick and mortar store in that amount of time!
I absolutely loved the fact that the refrigerated and frozen items were packed in separate bags. It was much more convenient to put my groceries away. I didn’t have to sort through everything to find the cold items while the other things melted or got warm. The only items from my order that were not present were three jars of spaghetti sauce but that was because the store was out of stock and I chose not to get a substitute. The delivery man pointed this out to me on the receipt.
You might want to note some things money-wise. While Safeway Club Card saving are applied, you cannot take advantage of any paper coupons. The shredded cheese I ordered had a coupon that said “Save $1.00 NOW on this package!” Did I save $1.00 on each package with that coupon attached? No. Since I bought six of them, I could have save $6.00 right there. Also, gift cards cannot be redeemed on online orders. You can go to the store and exchange it (for an additional $4.95) for a Visa gift card but that defeats the purpose discussed here.
My conclusion? It’s fast, convenient, and boy did it make me feel special having someone else do my grocery shopping! If you have a lot of or high-value coupons, it would be best to save those for your next in-store trip.
If you are pressed for time or maybe just not feeling well, think about ordering online at Safeway.com and have it delivered right to your front door. To give you that extra push to at least try it out, use promo code SIMPLE to get $7 off and free delivery on your first order. You have nothing to lose but only time and energy to save!
