Capturing Summer Fun with Your Pet + Giveaway (Closed)

With summer in full swing, I’m sure many of you are spending tons of time outdoors.  I know we are and anytime we go outside our little dachshund is sure to be right behind us.  And because it’s so hot and we are spending time outdoors, Dr. Donna Spector (a VCA veterinarian) gives us some ways you can keep the animals safe during the summer.

Overheating and dehydration can happen so easily in the summer time heat. Here are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your animal is protected.

  1. Common early signs of an overheated dog are: noisy or labored breathing, excessive panting, and bright red mucus membranes.
  2. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency! If you are concerned your pet is overheated, check their temperature. The normal canine body temperature is 100 to 102.5. If the temperature registers over 105 degrees, contact your veterinarian immediately!
  3. Always keep a water bowl with you whenever you are out with your pet. There are some easy to use collapsible bowls available…some that can even clip on your leash.
  4. You can place a cool, wet towel over your dog or place him in a bath of lukewarm to cool water. NEVER use ice or very cold water to try to cool a hot pet. If you have a garden hose handy, you can run cool water over them.
  5. In addition to heat stroke, warm sunny days can pose a risk of sunburn for light-haired pets or for those with very thin hair. Remember that pavement becomes very hot on sunny days—easily able to burn and blister your pets paw pads.
  6. Summer is a popular time for grilling and outdoor parties. Remember to keep your pets leashed or inside to prevent them from eating potentially toxic party foods (chocolate, grapes, onions, etc.)

After reading all these tips while I was getting this post ready, I started feeling like such an uneducated pet owner.  While I knew that chocolate was a no-no for Piccolo, I had no idea about onions and grapes.  And sunburns — I had no idea.

    I have 3 pets. I have a Tuxedo cat named Whiskers and he is 15 years old. I have a Beagle/Lab mix named Sunny and she is 5 years old. And finally, I have Ruger. He’s named after the gun and he is aptly named…shoots all over this house. He is 2 years old and a Yorkie/Shelty Terrier mix.

    Our dog’s name is Radar. When we adopted him from the shelter, he was named Radiator. We didn’t like the name, but wanted to sound similar so it wouldn’t throw him off. So he’s named Radar after the character in M.A.S.H.!

    My babies are Killer (14 y/o toy poodle) Katie (8 y/0 beagle) Chloe ( 2 y/o shi tzu) and Kramer ( 2 y/o shi tzu) all my babies are rescues and the best dogs in the world lol well of course I think so.

    We have 9 cats. Their names are Wicket, Trickster, Jynx, Indy, Misha, Presto (short for Prestidigitation), Remy, Kali Malicious, and Petra.

    Another tip: One of my older cats, who’s gone now, developed some tumors on his ears. He was a tabby-point Siamese, so his ears were a medium gray. The vet said it was probably because of sun exposure. He said the darker the cat’s fur is, the more susceptible they are to skin cancers and tumors like that. I guess it’s like dark cars getting hotter in the summer. We now try to limit the amount of time our cats, especially the darker ones, spend sitting in the windows.

    My dog is named Puffy. We rescued him when he was three years old and that was his name, so we kept it. We have about a million nicknames for him though, like Puff Daddy, Puff-fah-fah, Sir Barks a Lot, Sir Wags a Lot, and PuffPuff.

    We have a Havanese doge named Ellie Mae and a Japanese Chin dog named Shin Yu. We have a short-haired black cat named Cuddles and a very large (and handsome) short-haired gray cat named Gracie (we named him before we knew he was a male.) It will be wonderful rotating their pictures in the frame!
