I received a Magellan eXplorist GC hand held GPS that is made specifically for geocaching. We spent Father’s Day afternoon going on our first geocaching adventure and it was so easy with the Magellan eXplorist.
First thing we did was to go to www.geocaching.com and search for geocaches in our area. I was pleased to discover that there were multiple sites within just a few miles of our house. We downloaded the geocaches we wanted to find into our receiver and then off we went!
The eXplorist was so simple to use that our two boys, ages 7 and 9, were able to follow the directions once we got out of the car. They took turns navigating us to the caches. The first one took Gavin about ten minutes to actually find, since it was held up under a bench with a magnet case. The second cache was quickly discovered once Garrett got us within a few feet. One of the caches contained a geocache game piece. Both contained logs, with signatures of those who found it before us, dozens of others over the last several years.
The boys were quite disappointed when it started to rain and we had to stop after only two. They are already asking if we can go next weekend! What an exciting and educational way to explore our community (and any others we might visit) and spend time together on a common mission!
The Magellan eXplorist allows you to examine the geocache locations, find it on the map, and provides navigation directions in order to help you find the hidden cache. Hints are even available. Once found, you can record the findings. There are different levels of difficulty assigned to each cache. Geocaches are hidden all over the world. It was so simple, the eXplorist really took all the guesswork out of it. I’m not that great with directions usually, so geocaching with a regular GPS seems a lot more difficult to me. We really had a good time!

I’m taking mine out for a spin this weekend hopefully. I had planned to do it today, but we have severe thunderstorms in the forecast, as opposed to the daily “scattered” storms. Sorry you got rained out, but at least you were able to find a cache before that happened! Looks like everyone had fun!
