My husband is the ultimate gamer. If he has any spare time, it’s often spent playing games on the Xbox, Wii, DS or computer. In addition to being a gamer, he also loves music. So when you combine gaming and music, it’s pure bliss for my husband.
We recently received Power Gig: Rise of the SixString for review and my husband was super excited to open it. When he opened the box, he and I were both quite impressed that the guitar is a real electric guitar but it is also the wireless controller. Power Gig: Rise of the SixString is the first and only music videogame that uses a real guitar as a controller and teaches the fundamental skills of guitar playing in the process.
My husband really knows nothing about playing the guitar. He tried taking lessons a few years back but that didn’t last too long. We had children and his interest in it seemed to go away. But now that the children can game with him, his interests are once again changing.
Power Gig Rocks for Kids
It’s a revolutionary band video game with a fully immersive storyline that takes players beyond the music and into a world of intriguing characters, special powers, and an epic journey to save rock and roll.
My children are all pretty young, seven and under, and this game is a little over their heads. They are still playing Toy Story.
Real Guitar
Power Gig is the first and only band video game with a real guitar as a controller, so kids can “rock it real” while they play. NO prior guitar experience necessary!
Like I mentioned, we were both amazed that it came with a REAL guitar. It’s no Les Paul by any means, but it is a real guitar! While no prior guitar experience is necessary, don’t expect to get too far if you know nothing about a guitar. My hubby gets quite frustrated because he wants to be a pro, and doesn’t take too well to not mastering it right away. Our friend who has tons of experience with a guitar, does much better.
Excellent Song List
Power Gig features songs from music superstars like Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, John Mayer, and No Doubt to today’s biggest emerging bands, like Paramore, Jet, Silversun Pickups, and Snow Patrol.
My husband is totally digging the variety of songs. He said there was nothing “too hard” so it’s fine to play with the kiddos around.
Learn How to Play the Guitar
Power Gig can help teach basic guitar skills including how to properly press down on a string, hold a pick, and strum. In addition, you can turn on an optional chording mode that will help teach players actual guitar power chords in the songs they are playing.
If you or your children want to learn how to play, you can learn the basics of playing the guitar right in your own home.
Music Makes You Smarter
Did you know that playing music develops concentration and memory and sharpens hand-eye coordination? And according to NAMM, studies show that music enhances intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development.
We could all benefit from being smarter…right?
One-Stop Shopping
You can buy everything you need in one box! The band kit comes with the game and the SixString guitar controller so you can start playing right away.
Being a busy mommy of three small children, one-stop shopping is a must!
Worry-Free Fun
In a marketplace of violent video games, rest assured that Power Gig’s world of Ohm is a peaceful zone. The ESRB gave the game a T (Teen) rating, listing mild lyrics and mild suggestive themes.
I love that my children can enjoy playing this game with the hubby. It makes for a fun family game night.
What makes Power Gig: Rise of the SixString unique is it is more than just a game where you play music. There is actually a storyline and Ohm, a world where music is banned and Rockers are oppressed, is entirely in your hands. You and your band have to defeat the tyranny of the Headliner! The more you play, the more songs you are able to unlock and play.
This really is geared towards teens and even adults. It’s very hard for young kids to get the hang of it, but it’s fun watching anyway.
Buy:
You can purchase Power Gig: Rise of the SixString at Amazon.com as well as Walmart, Target and a few other retailers nationwide.

omg this sounds so cool! Having a REAL guitar is such a plus! So cool that you can really learn to play too. My 18 yr old daughter is smitten with all of these games. She dreams of having them and asks for them for bday and holiday gifts. Have to go check the price! Thanks so much!
