I’m sure you’ve all heard the story of Romeo & Juliet, right? So I’m sure you’re wondering how the greatest Shakespearian love story can be transformed into a movie geared towards children – I know I did. While the Shakespearian version of a tragic love story featured love, poison and death, the Asbury-ian version features love, garden gnomes and pink flamingos. Did I mention it is adorably cute?
I actually had the opportunity to preview Gnomeo & Juliet in January while I was in LA and I was incredibly relieved once I saw the film. In my mind I couldn’t figure how anyone could take the story of Romeo & Juliet and turn it into a film that was suitable for people of all ages. But that is exactly what Director Kelly Asbury did — and he did an amazing job! While I would have never thought to bring the two together (garden gnomes and the Shakespearian love story), the film is quite possibly the most brilliant thing since sliced bread.
The greatest love story ever told, starring…garden gnomes? In the upcoming “Gnomeo & Juliet,” Shakespeare’s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury (“Shrek 2”) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?
The film resembles the tragic love story in that there was a forbidden love relationship between feuding families. The two families are constantly bickering, even their garden gnomes. Between lawnmower wars, misunderstandings, and even heartbreak, the “reds” and “blues” finally find a way to live happily ever after.
The film offers entertainment for the whole family and a message that rings true today. Love will always conquer hate, no matter what the circumstance. I’ve seen the film twice now and each time I laugh, each time I cry (darn Featherstone) and each time I still want to watch it again.
You can catch Gnomeo & Juliet in 3D in theatres near you on February 11th!

I just saw the film last night. While it was cute, it didn’t live up to my expectations unfortunately. My kids enjoyed it but neither myself or my boys were laughing as much as we did for our last several theater outings to see such favorites as Tangled, Megamind, Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me. I didn’t leave wishing I hadn’t gone, it just wasn’t as good as we’d hoped and it was a bit forgettable for my family. Total bummer that way because I was expecting to love it.
