During Baby’s first year you’ll find that you have some favorites. The Fisher Price SpaceSaver High Chair will probably be at the top.
That first year is rough.
Sometimes, I wonder how I got through it once, let alone three times. I look back now and it’s through the support of my husband, family and a few baby related products that got me past those first 12 months.
Fisher-Price recently did a poll of hundreds of BabyCenter Moms, and they’ve come up with a list of ten products that are Mom’s First Year Favorites.
As I was looking over the list of Mom’s First Year Favorites, memories of my first years were flooding my mind. As I read each one, I had my own “I remember when the ______ made it possible for me to cook dinner” or “The _________ was the only way I could get in a shower most days.”
I’m sure most moms can relate!
Although my top ten wouldn’t necessarily be in the order of their top ten (swing would still definitely be in the #1 position), I did use each product listed and feel that the products helped me so much during that trying first year. Besides the swing, which I could not have survived without, the breast pump was my next best friend. It allowed me to have a huge supply waiting at all times in the freezer and it allowed for daddy to help when mommy was unavailable.
The sleeper was another product that helped keep me sane because I wasn’t constantly worrying if baby was cold. I could lay the kiddos in their cribs and know that they were comfortable and warm without checking on them every five minutes or so.
Rank | Product |
---|---|
1 | Swing |
2 | Bouncer |
3 | Sleeper |
4 | Feeding Support Pillow |
5 | Carrier |
6 | High Chair |
7 | Activity Gym |
8 | Jumperoo |
9 | Breast Pump |
10 | Play Mat |
What do you think about the top ten list? Would your top ten include these products and/or be in this order?
Fisher-Price SpaceSaver High Chair
Since all of my babies really aren’t babies anymore, when I received the Fisher Price SpaceSaver High Chair, I passed it along to my nephew who is 17 months. Since I needed to see how it worked, I took to my sister-in-law’s house and set it up for her. It was easy to assemble (I did it all by myself) and didn’t take longer than ten minutes or so. It probably shouldn’t have even taken that long, but I wanted to ensure I was doing everything correctly so I really took my time.
My sister-in-law was excited about this particular high chair because it can be utilized using a chair from your table and it doesn’t have to be stored. This can be a good thing if you have an extra chair at the table. But if you are like us, a family of five, who had a table for four until just recently, this wouldn’t have worked for us. It definitely lives up to the “spacesaver” portion of the name though.
The Fisher Price SpaceSaver High Chair features a three-position recline that accommodates even the youngest of children and offers a safe eating environment. It also features a three-position height adjustment that grows as your baby grows and allows them to be more a part of mealtime with the whole family. During all my pushing, prodding and testing, I was happy to discover that the tray stays level and does not move when reclining or adjusting the height. Once you get past that infant stage and into the toddler stage, this high chair easily converts into a booster for toddler dining.
The high chair straps on easily to your table chair with a strap around the back of the chair and a strap around the bottom of the chair. The straps that attach the high chair to the chair are pretty long, so it should be able to fit any chair.
The dishwasher-safe tray (if you have a dishwasher big enough) offers the ability to take off and put on the tray with just one hand. With a baby in the house, most of the time you do everything one handed anyway.
The full-size seat pad is spill resistant and machine washable however, I’m not sure about the straps that hold baby in. I couldn’t figure out a way to detach them, so I’m guessing you will just have to wipe those down.
Securing your child into the high chair is a bit tedious. The shoulder straps feature a loop that must be placed on the waist straps before clicking into the bottom strap. Once you learn how to do it, it’s less intimidating, but it would be nice if the waist straps and shoulder straps were somehow connected making the process easier with less steps. That being said, baby isn’t going anywhere because when secured correctly, they are safely secured in the chair. All the straps are easily adjustable and can be extended as your child grows.
Overall, I think it’s good high chair, especially if you have extra chairs at the table. I remember having to put our high chair off to the side in the dining area and it really was an eyesore. This one is strapped on a chair, out of the way, and stylish too.

when I first had my son I couldn’t hold him for long periods of time because I had carpal tunnel so often had to set him down in a bouncer that I kept near my seat. I can still see him today in my mind, sitting in that bouncer and happily moving his leg up and down so he could bounce on his own while gurgling happily. With my daughter the only way to find peace was to put her in her swing and turn on the news! 13 years later with my son he hated his swing but had to have his bouncy seat. Both kids still love the news! haha

The jumperoo is great! My daughter absolutely loved it!
Chelle says
I have the Rainforest jumperoo and couldn’t have made it without it. A complete lifesaver!! I take it oustide on the patio and along to our cottage. I use it to run downstairs to do laundry. Both of my kids loved it. I also have the Rainforest cradle swing. There were many a night baby number one wouldn’t sleep anywhere but here. I know not the best thing, but when a new mom you do what you need to do to get a little shut eye 😉

After seeing what a smart item the space-saver chair is from my sister, BIL & 18-month-old nephew, we put the same item on our registry for our little girl, due in August!
Jeanette says
I found a used Space Saver high chair at a thrift shop and love it! It cleaned up really well and works wonderfully with a chair I have in the kitchen that the back came off of. I was going to toss the chair but the remaining piece turned into great “legs” for the high chair:) The seat cover washed really well in the washer too, straps and all 🙂 The high chair has been well loved but is holding up great and hopefully will for the next baby!!
Jeanette says
On my list for #1 item is the Rock ‘n’ Play sleeper. It’s a cradle that rocks baby for daytime or nighttime and is PORTABLE!!! My daughter has used hers since day one and is still using it at 5 months old – she loves it and so do I! It’s a perfect height to put next to the bed or sofa. I have taken ours and folded it up to fly on the airplane or to put in the trunk for a road trip. It’s also great because it fits in smaller spaces than a crib or bassinet does. With the push of two buttons, it folds right up and is very light weight. Wish they had these 9 years ago with my older daughter and so glad they are out there now for this daughter and the next baby!!
Erin Lawrence says
Our Fisher Price Jumperoo was definitely one of my favorite purchases for my first daughter. She was a super active baby and loved having the freedom to move around before she could walk. We just had baby #2 two weeks ago and I’m so glad we saved the Jumperoo for her to use!

Love the bouncer! My son is actually bouncing away in his right now as I type. It keeps him occupied for 10-15 minutes so that I can do a few things that need to get done (like entering contests!). I would also add the bumbo to the list. Love that thing! I was ready to feed my baby at 5 months but he couldn’t sit up yet, so I put him in the bumbo (I set it on the floor-not on the table) and fed him.
Erin E says
My memory is – We have the Fisher Price Snugglebunny swing, and my daughter LOVED It from birth. In fact she would not sleep anywhere else until she was almost 4 months old. Thank you for the lovely giveaway!

I LOVED the swing with both girls. It was the only way Sydney would nap for a while. But At 6 months old I had to retire it for S because she kept trying to get the mobile butterflies that spun around above it and almost broke the whole thing. I was sad 🙁

the top #1 item made motherhood EASY!!.. my 6 month old was very collicky, and the swing helped big time!.. it gave me a spare pair of ‘hands’ when i was home alone with her and my toddler… and it helped soothe and calm her. I honestly don’t know what i would have done without a swing!jackie
