The iTikes Canvas brings the magnetic doodle board into the 21st century. This toy is “where tech meets play” and turns your iPad into a drawing pad.  Using your iPad, little artists can create art with coloring pages, artistic tools, stamps, and other fun effects.

My favorite feature of the toy is the app, available for free download in the Apple app store. I do have other drawings apps already on my iPad, but this is a great version. There are two main features of the app: drawing and games.

The app features blank pages for your child’s imagination to run wild. A cute touch is the hexagon background, a throwback to the traditional version of this toy. Artists can use the 6 shape buttons on the sides of the board to stamp their canvas. My daughters also liked being able to add digital stamps, like butterflies, to their masterpieces. Although a great idea, I do wish the Canvas board itself offered more options than the stamps and crank-style eraser.  iTikes Canvas Review

The app also comes with coloring pages. Using the rainbow crayon, swipe your finger over the picture and the correct color will be filled in. Another way to create is to upload photos from your iPad’s photo library to embellish.

There are two games included: memory and catch. The catch is intended to teach drawing skills, like making lines. Harper, 3, wasn’t able to make the dog catch the ball on several tries and gave up (I didn’t have great success either). She much preferred the memory game. It features three levels of play (easy, medium, or hard) allowing for a wider range of users.

The toy works without an iPad. When an iPad is not in place, the artist has access to a magnetic doodle board. This increases the toy’s versatility and allows me to have my iPad back. This feature is a nice option, but I wouldn’t recommend this toy unless an iPad is available in your home. Removing the iPad is simple, but I did find myself using my iPad while still in the Canvas rather than taking it out and putting it back in.

When opening the box, we were disappointed the iPad conductive stylus was missing. I called the customer support line listed on the product’s packaging and was happy to be on hold for less than ten minutes. While waiting I learned that Little Tikes has gone green and is no longer printing catalogs. Since the Canvas is a relatively new toy, replacement parts were not readily available. The extremely helpful customer service representative told me she would call me back Monday or Tuesday with information. It was shocking that Monday when I returned home from work, the replacement stylus was there waiting for me.

Now that we had all of the parts, I let my daughters test it out. On our first use, the foam dome-shaped tip of the stylus fell off. It started out flopping because of a small tear, but with preschooler use it fell off quickly. It was disappointing, but you don’t actually need the stylus to be able to use the toy.

Overall, we had fun coloring with the Canvas. It’d be great for long car-rides or sick days spent on the couch. It is recommended for ages 3+, and this would serve as a great way to introduce the use of an iPad to a young, artistic child.

    I learned this works even without an iPad. Instead of the iPad in place, there is a magnetic doodle board. My grandson would love that option, too!

    I learned that the IPad Canvas is a very creative tool that kids will be able to use to draw. I liked the idea of drawing on the photographs. Thanks for such a good review. I sure would love to win it.

    i learned that little tikes has gone green and is no longer printing catalogs. which is really awesome since i think most people just throw them away anyway and do most stuff online
