If you’re looking for a family-friendly activity that is fun for all ages, check out Medieval Times.
With five kids ages 14, 12, 3, 2, and 7 months, it’s hard to find something we can ALL enjoy! It’s either something the little ones love that bores the rest of us, or something the big kids want to do that the little ones are too young to enjoy. We really struggle finding a good family activity!
I’ve driven by the Medieval Times castle in Dallas all of my life but surprisingly, I’ve never been there. When we got the opportunity to go, I’m not sure who was more excited — me or the kids.
We decided to take our oldest three and leave the two little ones at home, just because we knew we wouldn’t have to hold or chase any of the older three. 🙂
We got there shortly before the show started, which truthfully, is not early enough time since the doors open 75 minutes before the show starts and seating is first come, first serve. Luckily, we were still able to get great seats.
The food, which I thought was delicious, was served right away. I think it’s important to know the menu is a set menu, which is great for the indecisive ones, but plan to take food home if you have a picky eater in your bunch.
The show keeps you on the edge of your seat and it’s exciting the entire time! The knights participate in a jousting tournament for the title of the King’s Champion. And, I can’t go without mentioning the horses. They are simply spectacular! Their training and the show that results from it are one of a kind. My head was on a swivel watching the show and watching the expressions on our kids’ faces. I LOVED it but I wanted to make sure my kids were loving it just as much. Fortunately, they WERE!
Our 14 year old posted on her Instagram account that she can’t wait to go back and if you’re a parent of a teenager, you know how huge that is. 🙂
Our three year old came home and started sword fighting in the kitchen with his big brother. I think that went on for the next three days and all the while he kept staring at our family picture at Medieval Times and talking about how much fun he had.
Medieval Times has eight castles across the US and one in Toronto. Check out their website to see if there’s a castle near you! But before you go, here’s a few things to know about the experience.
- No silverware. Yes, you eat that whole meal with nothing but your hands.
- If you bring smaller children, don’t be surprised if your lap is the best seat for them. They will want to be higher up to see everything they can.
- As I mentioned before, there’s a set menu. At our castle, that included oven roasted chicken, garlic bread, potato wedges, tomato bisque soup, and an apple pastry. It’s more than enough food.
- After the show, you can take pictures with the knights and get their autographs. My kids love looking back on those pictures.
The Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament was definitely a family activity that was perfect for the ages of our family! We can’t wait to go back!

We love Medieval Times – we went to the one in Kissimmee when our daughter was 5 and she got chosen to be the queen of love and beauty – good times and memories! We’re moving to the DFW area by September. We’ll have to put this on the list of things to do for our ‘staycations’.
