Some of you might consider jerky “junk food”, as many brands are full preservatives and sodium, but just wait until you try gourmet jerky!  Golden Island products are all natural, with no preservatives, no hormones, and no nitrates, with 40-60% less sodium than competing brands.  Also, you get up to a whopping 8 grams of protein per serving!

Golden Island is the nation’s leading producer of gourmet jerky, with more than twenty different pork and beef flavors.  The pork varieties are “kettle cooked” and the beef varieties are “flame grilled”.  There are even gluten free versions (the very popular Mandarin Orange Beef Jerky and the Korean Barbeque Pork Jerky).

It’s nice to know that the stuff is actually good for you, but I know what you really want to know is how does it taste?

Well, for starters, let me tell you, I’ve never had jerky that almost melts in your mouth.  It is seriously that soft and pliable, so no sore jaws and gums after eating a few pieces!

Of the six flavors we received, the kids and I all agreed that Grilled Barbeque Pork was our favorite, with Teriyaki Pork, and Mandarin Orange Beef following closely behind.  The Grilled Barbeque Pork just had the perfect amount of smoky flavor with just a hint of sweetness.  The Teriyaki Pork and Mandarin Orange were both sweeter, and a bit stronger, in flavor.

The Hickory Black Pepper Beef Jerky was okay, but it was a bit drier in consistency.  None of us really cared for the Chili Lime Beef; it was too spicy for our tastes.  Overall we tend to prefer a milder flavor.  I really liked the Korean Barbeque Pork, but the kids didn’t appreciate it.

    Wow! They all sound wonderful, but if I win I would have to share with my hubby and he does not eat pork. So the Mandarin Orange Beef sounds like my first choice.
