NBC has asked me to help promote the 2014 Winter Olympics. I am being compensated for my participation in the program but all opinions expressed in the post are my own and not those of NBC.

Living in Texas we don’t see many cold weather days, although this year it’s been unusually rough. There were several days in a row that the temperature was below freezing.  Our lakes and ponds don’t freeze over giving us an area to ice skate, so we have to get creative and set up temporary ice rinks in mall parking lots. It’s true, y’all. So the husband and I took the kids for their first ever ice skating experience as we get ready for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. For the first time ever, the 2014 Winter Olympics will kick-off February 6th on NBC, one night before the opening ceremonies, featuring new Olympic sport Snowboard Slopestyle!

Because I had surgery just two weeks ago, I was unable to get on the ice with the rest of the family. But I was able to sit along the sidelines and watch them as they made memories together.

If you’ve never ice skated before it’s terrifying knowing that just a thin little blade is what keeps you vertical.  After putting on their skates and realizing it was going to be as easy as they thought it was going to be, there was a bunch of pep-talking that had to be done to actually get them on the ice. Thankfully their father was ready for the challenge and took to the ice with all three of them.

There were smiles, there were tears, there were tantrums and there were falls, but most of all, there was family time. In this crazy busy world I sometimes get so wrapped up in everything that needs to be done that I don’t just sit and watch. As I was sitting and watching, I learned so much about these people who I live with and see every single day.

ice skating rylan and daddyMy kids absolutely loved our winter adventure to the ice rink. I think now when we are all watching and rooting for Team USA during the Winter Olympics, they are going to enjoy and appreciate the talent of the ice skating portion.

To help the non-experienced skaters, we were able to rent those little blue walkers you can see in the above pictures. Those walkers were instrumental in helping my children make their way around the ice.  Without them I doubt my children would have even given it a try.

    The figure skating, do they do couples in the Olympics too? I don’t recall, but I like both the singles and couples. I’m always in awe of their skill!

    Personally I’m very fond of the gymnastics but those aren’t a winter sport so my second favorite is the speed skating. I find it kind of mesmerizing the way they swing their arms.
