“Violet, you’re turning violet, Violet.”
Can you name the movie that quote came from? If you’re like me, you know and adore Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We have shared the original film with our children, and, other than the tunnel scene, they adored it. It’s a dream for most kids — to visit a candy factory and have unlimited access to any confection you could want or dream up.
Wonka candy doesn’t just exist in the movies, though. We were able to bring the nonsensical and scrumptious fun to our family with a Wonka-themed party. Some times, you just need to say yes to being silly, eating candy, and having fun as a family.
To embrace the silliness, I found some April Fools cupcakes from Our Best Bites while searching the web. Although it’s August, not April, the mashed potato and peas and carrots cupcakes were still a good laugh. Some Banana Laffy Taffy served as the butter atop the frosting mashed potatoes…the rest of the bag mysteriously disappeared when no one was looking. Shush, don’t tell!
You can’t have a Wonka-themed party without candy. You just can’t. Most days I try to monitor my kids’ sugar intake, but today was not one of those days. I decorated with buckets of candy, plus purple and yellow streamers, and balloons. In true Willy Wonka style, the kids decorated themselves with a purple boa, top hat, and oversized glasses.
Because there’s always room for something scrumdiddlyumptious, we served Wonka Peel-a-Pops. They look and peel like bananas, but something wondrous awaits inside. Who said you can’t play with your food? To celebrate with the frozen treat, you bite, peel, and eat. After a minute, the edible peel becomes chewy and reveals vanilla ice cream.
At only 70 calories per serving, the pops are great for the kid in all of us. They come in two flavors, Vanilla Banana and Vanilla Grape. At the party, we sampled the banana. I picked up the grape another day, and both of my older girls said they preferred the grape. According to my 6-year-old, it was “deliciouser.” The vanilla ice cream really was yummy, but the peel itself wasn’t for me. It reminded me of firm jello, and I’ve got texture issues with food.
These are the final days of summer, and I love being able to make them special for my family. If you’re looking to make some whimsical fun, look for Wonka not only in the candy aisle but now in the frozen section at your local store.
