But to be completely honest, it wasn’t until the last five years or so that I’ve been adventurous enough to try brussels sprouts either. But once I did, I fell in love with all the different ways to cook brussels sprouts.
Brussels Sprouts
The brussels sprout is actually part of the cabbage family. The leafy green vegetables are usually between an inch and an inch and a half in diameter and look just like miniature cabbages. The Brussels sprout has been popular in Brussels, Belgium, for a very long time and may have actually gained its name there.
How to Cook Brussels Sprouts
The most common ways to cook brussels sprouts are by boiling, steaming, stir frying, grilling, slow cooking, or roasting. To ensure even cooking throughout, it’s best to choose brussels sprouts of similar size. To help get an even cook throughout, you can make a single cut or a cross in the center of each stem.
In my personal opinion, roasting brussels sprouts is the best way to cook them to bring out their earthy flavor. Common toppings or additions for brussels sprouts include Parmesan cheese and butter, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, bacon, pistachios, pine nuts, mustard, brown sugar, chestnuts, or pepper. Another popular way of cooking Brussels sprouts is to sauté them in butter. Brussels sprouts can also be pickled as an alternative to cooking them.
Overcooking brussels sprouts will result in a soft gray bud with a very strong flavor and odor. The odor resembles that of sulfur and can be very overwhelming to the senses.
