If you’re looking for a more natural toothpaste for your dog, this easy to make DIY Dog Toothpaste is an affordable, all natural, safe solution.
If you’re a dog parent you already know that your dog’s breath can get pretty rank. I try to remember to brush my dog’s teeth every day, but let’s be honest here – I fail at that quite regularly.
Just like us, dogs can develop bad breath. The problem is they can’t remedy it themselves by brushing their own teeth. They’re totally dependent on us in keeping their breath fresh and clean.
If you’re like me and don’t always remember to brush their teeth, they can develop plaque and tartar which leads to nasty breath, unfortunately.
When I do remember to brush my dog’s teeth, I want to use a safe, all natural toothpaste that’s inexpensive and easy on the checkbook. Since I have three children, two dogs, and one cat, toothpaste can get pretty expensive.
Many pet toothpastes on the market contain ingredients I just don’t feel comfortable using on my dogs. If you feel the same, you can make a batch of this DIY Dog Toothpaste in under 10 minutes.
DIY Dog Toothpaste Ingredients
To make this all natural toothpaste for dogs, you’ll need some ingredients you already have on hand if you try to live a natural lifestyle. All of the ingredients in the all-natural dog toothpaste are safe for their consumption. To make one batch, you’ll need:
- organic coconut oil
- baking soda
- dried thyme
- dried basil
- peppermint oil
Since I already had all these ingredients on hand, I can’t calculate how much it cost me exactly to make this DIY Dog Toothpaste. I can’t remember how much I paid for each of these items to break it down. But I do know that it was pretty inexpensive.
The best part is I feel safe using it on my two precious dogs.
I always try to use organic ingredients, if at all possible. Sometimes the costs are so much different that I end up not buying the organic version. If you can afford it, always go organic.
For the Peppermint Oil, I only use Young Living essential oils. It’s an absolutely pure oil with no added chemicals.
Note: Not all oils are safe for dogs. Please check with your Vet before using oils on your pets.

Hi Crystal
Does the jar have to be glass? And does it have to be refrigerated?
Thanks so much!
Crystal says
Hello Ami,
I don’t think it has to be a glass jar. With that being said, sometimes oils will interact with plastic. I guess it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. And no, you don’t have to refrigerate the toothpaste.
If you try it in a plastic container, let me know how it works out for you.
