I was one of the lucky mommy bloggers who were invited out to LA to attend the Red Carpet Premiere of Gnomeo & Juliet back in January! If you missed my updates about my trip, you can read all about in the archives.
We recently received Gnomeo & Juliet on DVD & Blu-ray and even though I had already seen it, my family wasn’t as lucky and the kiddos were squealing with excitement when I showed them.
So, if you couldn’t tell by the name, Gnomeo & Juliet is Kelly Asbury’s version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. When I first heard about the film, I wasn’t sure how someone could take a story about love, poison and death and make it suitable for children. But, Kelly Asbury did and he did a phenomenal job – without the poison and death part!
The film resembles the tragic love story in that there was a forbidden love relationship between feuding families. The two families are constantly bickering, even their garden gnomes. Between lawnmower wars, misunderstandings, and even heartbreak, the “reds” and “blues” finally find a way to live happily ever after.
The greatest love story ever told, starring…garden gnomes? In the upcoming “Gnomeo & Juliet,” Shakespeare’s revered tale gets a comical, off-the-wall makeover. Directed by Kelly Asbury (“Shrek 2”) and showcasing both classic and original songs by Elton John, the film features the voices of James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as Gnomeo and Juliet, who have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and thrilling lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?
The film offers entertainment for the whole family and a message that rings true today. Love will always conquer hate, no matter what the circumstance. I’ve seen the film four times now and each time I laugh, each time I cry (darn Featherstone) and each time I still want to watch it again.
My children loved the film and sat and watched it all the way through and even asked to watch it again. They started to ask questions when it slowed down around the Featherstone part, but once it picked back up, they sat quietly and watched.
The DVD/Blu-ray set offers exclusives bonus features including:
DVD & Movie Download:
- Elton Builds a Garden
- Frog Talk with Ashley Jensen
- “Crocodile Rock” Music Video, featuring Elton John and Nelly Furtado
Blu-ray:
- DVD Bonus plus:
- 2 Alternate Endings with Filmmaker Introductions
- Deleted & Alternate Scenes with Filmmaker Introductions, including:
- 1 Alternate Opening
- 1 Alternate Scene

While I would have never thought to bring the two together (garden gnomes and the Shakespearian love story), it surpassed my expectations and the music from Elton John was just icing on the cake.
