Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Okay, let’s face it.  Sometimes getting kids to eat healthy can present quite a challenge.

For example, wheat bread.

Some brands are just downright dry and tasteless and I don’t blame the little people for not wanting to eat it.

That’s why I love Sara Lee Iron Kids!

And the best part is the kids don’t know it’s healthier than regular white bread.

tomato basil grilled cheese sandwichSo, when they were eating the Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese Sandwiches I fixed the other night, they ate them with no questions asked and even asked for seconds.

I love quick and easy recipes and this one is definitely quick and easy.  I’m sure you’ve had plain ‘ol grilled cheese, but adding a little basil and tomato, definitely takes this sandwich up a notch.

Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Yield: 1

Ingredients

  • 2 slices Sara Lee Iron Kids Bread
  • 2 slices cheese
  • 1 tomato slice
  • 1 basil leaf
  • 1/2 - 1 tsp butter

Instructions

  • Butter both slices of bread.
  • Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, onto a heated pan. Add one slice of cheese, top with tomato slice, add basil leaf and top with remaining sliced cheese. Place other slice of bread, buttered side up, on top.
  • Once the bottom slice of bread reaches the desired "browness", flip over to toast the other slice of bread. Once the second side is done, it's time to chow down!

    Serve with a bowl of Tomato Soup and you have a tasty meal perfect for any weather!

      Your grilled cheese sandwich recipe sounds very good! I would like to make that, but I might make some changes, as in using pesto or roasted red peppers or spinach leaves, along with the cheese.

      I make grilled cheese but I put cooked bacon and sliced vidalia onions in before I cook the grilled cheese. The cheese gets all melty on the bacon and it is great.

      I love Iron Kids bread. It is the only bread that I buy, not only for my three children but I love it myself. I make the best french toast, or that’s what my kids tell me, with Iron Kids bread. 🙂

      Well, after drooling over that sandwich of yours, I would make it. I had so much fresh basil and tomatoes this past garden season, I was running out of ideas of how to use it fresh. This would be yummy!

      I’d make a really great grilled cheese but I’d add slices of tomato and bacon for the cheese to melt over. That sounds sooooo good with a salad or bowl of soup!

      I make grilled cheese with a variety of cheese with tomato and then add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and a dash of honey.

      I would make a toad in the hole. Those are yummy. (You butter one side of the bread, put it in the pan butter side down. Then you pull apart the middle of the bread to make a little opening. Crack an egg on top, and cook! YUMMY!)

      I too would make grilled sandwiches but I use fat free swiss & honey turkey & Buttered cooking spray. After cooking I cut into quaters & dip in a Habenero Mango dipping sauce!
