My daughters are total hams and use every opportunity to put on a show. They photobomb nearby snapshots and capture hundreds (literally hundreds) of self-portraits on my phone. I used to be just like them.
Now, I wouldn’t say I suffer with low self-esteem. I am awesome at baking pumpkin bread, reading with expression, and remembering the regular customers’ orders from 9 years ago when I was a waitress. But there’s a shift; something’s changed. Dove presented the question, and it’s one that’s left me stumped. When did you become camera shy?
Honestly, I don’t have an answer. When did I become so much more comfortable behind the camera? It’s a reality I hope to postpone for as long as possible, if not indefinitely, in my daughters. I want them to also have the confidence to let their real beauty be seen for the rest of their lives.
Dove, known for its real-beauty campaigns, has focused attention on the next generation. Dove has prepared a self-esteem discussion guide to help start the conversation with your own daughter. The guide is best suited for girls 11-16, but there is relevant information for all moms. For example, there are tips for creating better feelings about our own bodies and some things to avoid.
After downloading the discussion guide, enter to win a Walmart gift card. They are giving away one $300 Walmart gift card everyday and a $1,000 Walmart gift card grand prize! You can enter every day to increase your chance of winning! By purchasing Dove products at Walmart, we are supporting the self-esteem projects for girls. I hope my girls maintain the level of self-confidence that they possess now, even if it does mean using up all of the data storage on my cellphone.
Are you camera shy?
Mellisa says
Promoting self esteem at an early age is so important.
Melanie says
I agree. It’s so much easier to maintain a healthy self-esteem than trying to rebuild it in the sensitive tween/teenaged years.
Robin Gagnon {Mom Foodie} says
If my daughter listens to me, she’ll have a big fat ol’ ego..lol
Melanie says
Haha! As she should!
Colleen says
I’m camera shy when I don’t look good otherwise I’m fine.
Tiff @ Babes and Kids says
I’m not usually camera shy, but it’s interesting that some people do become that way. I love Dove’s campaigns and what they stand for!
Melanie says
I do too! The real women campaigns are some of my favorite.
Mickey says
I love that Dove has these campaigns that bring awareness to girls’ self-esteem! Awesome.
Shell Feis says
I’m a lot more camera shy than I was as a kid, but I just remind myself that I will want these pictures of my family- myself included- when I’m older. I’d rather have pictures of me not looking my best than not have any pictures at all!
Melanie says
That’s such a great point! Not enough make-up or a bad hair day isn’t a great reason to miss out on being part of the memories.
Leilani says
I have pictures from when I was a kid and I would totally work the camera. I think it was when i hit my preteens that I started to hate taking pictures.
Melanie says
Isn’t that weird? I think it’s the same for a lot of people. I love the complete glee on my face in my childhood pictures…and then the disdain for the photographer in my preteen pictures.
Kelsey Apley says
I love this!! Always great no matter what the age is to help build our self esteem as well as others around us!!
Theresa says
I love, love, love that Dove has these campaigns.
Lolo says
I am not so camera shy, but sometimes I cringe when I see a pic of me that is not flattering.
Donna says
I love Dove! And now I love Dove even more! I wish every girl grew up with high self-esteem and never, ever grew out of it, or had it taken from her.
Tammy says
I am not, I love giving a little smile and saying cheese!
Toni says
I am not camera shy at all LOL
