There was a lot of buzz recently about what constitutes a hero. No capes or secret identities are needed. To me, a hero is a person who does good despite adversity. A hero is a person who overcomes obstacles and leads others to do the same. My hero is my brother, Chris.
Technically speaking, Chris is my brother-in-law. But he began dating my sister when I was so young that I have no memories before him. What I remember of my childhood is Chris naming each type of firework from the nightly Disneyland show in my parents’ driveway. He was the one who taught me to ride a bicycle. Even though I’m an adult now, I’m still learning so much from him.
It’s impossible to tell you the history of my family without including a chapter on loss. When Dominic, Chris’s son, died at the age of 10 due to acute lymphoblastic leukemia, our world crumbled. But it was from the darkness of this time, a hero arose.
Rather than villainize the world that took his young son or play the victim, Chris made a point to do good. He became an advocate for cancer research and caring for those who are battling cancer. With the Ulman Cancer Fund, Chris rode his bicycle on a journey called Keys to Keys from Baltimore to the Florida Keys. His volunteer work fights cancer, embraces survivorship, and promotes a positive community.
His drive towards positive changes in the lives of his community makes Chris my hero. But he is not alone. There are heroes among us every day, and Mrs. Fields is looking for them in the Share Your Hero campaign!
Mrs. Field’s is hosting a sweet contest to honor these hometown heroes. Enter your hero on mrsfieldsmoments.com, for a chance to win the following:
- A year’s supply of cookies for you and your hero
- Your hero’s face on a future box of Mrs. Field’s cookies
Additionally, Mrs. Fields is remembering our heroes in the USO. As a proud supporter of the USO, Mrs. Fields is donating 25,000 cookies to our heroes in uniform. Their classic flavors or one of the new (Dark Chocolate Oatmeal and Butter Pecan Praline) are a sweet way to say thank you for those who make a difference.
I’d love to know who your heroes are! Share their story here and on enter on mrsfieldsmoments.com for a chance to win.

Sorry to read about the loss of your nephew! It is inspiring how your brother turned his sadness around and does so much to help others! My nephew battled Cancer when he was very young, Cancer truly doesn’t discriminate and doesn’t respect age/youth at all either! 🙁
Thanks for sharing, it is also great to learn how much Mrs Fields is doing for the USO as well.

What a beautiful testament of the power of love! Your brother reminds me of my friends Jeff and Joanne who’s son died of a rare form of cancer at the age of 6. They founded the Pablove foundation in honor of their son Pablo (Pablo + Love = Pablove) and have helped hundreds of families facing a similar battle as theirs. Jeff rides his bike across the US once a year along with dozens of volunteers to raise funds for theri organization. They also launched a program called Shutterbugs or cancer patients to experience the joy of photography. Jeff and jo Anne, along with my friend Kristy who founded FOCUSFish, my mom and dad… these are my heroes. I am blessed to be surrounded by these inspirational people!
