As the week of Ant-Man coverage comes to end, I’m going out with a bang with some facts about the Ant-Man costume.
But it gets better.
Not only did I get to touch and feel the Ant-Man costume and learn more about it from Costume Designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney, I actually put the helmet on my head, y’all. There are only a handful of other people that were allowed to try on the helmet. It was a pretty special moment and my husband is still jealous of that one.
Ant-Man Costume
As I’m sure you can imagine, designing a costume that is both functional and comfortable takes time, talent and patience. With state of the art technology at their fingertips, Costume Designers Sammy Sheldon and Ivo Coveney used a 3D printer to create sample helmet pieces before sending off the final piece for casting. There was a full seven months of prep to create the Ant-Man costume.
Each component of the Ant-Man costume is custom made in house with careful thought and consideration to the character of the costume. The red shoulder and chest material on the Ant-Man costume was designed to be reminiscent of insect eyes. It’s those special touches that make the Ant-Man costume an extraordinary piece.
In total, there are 13 suits, 17 helmets, 8 pairs of gloves and between 15-17 belts that make up the Ant-Man costume. There were several different complete Ant-Man costumes that were used during filming. Each Ant-Man costume served a certain purpose and was used during different scenes in the movie. The stunt costumes and pieces were a little more lightweight and moveable to be used during action scenes, while the hero costumes and pieces were used when the camera would be up close and personal. For example, the stunt belts were only piece, but the “hero” belt was over 50 pieces!
When speaking with costume’s designers, you could sense a passion and excitement about the work they did with this piece. With a costume as intricate and elaborate like this one, I’m sure there was much to be excited about. I can’t imagine how it must feel to see your costume on the big screen.
Talking about the big screen! Will you be going to see Ant-Man on opening day? I will as I celebrate my 29th birthday — again.

The costume looks really neat. I love how the idea of a teeny tiny superhero plays with the imagination. As a kid I loved several movies that involved shrinking down really small or being a giant. For some reason that concept of changing sizes dramatically is fascinating.

I didn’t realize that costume duplicates were needed. There is so much to think about when planning for a movie!
