This is a partnered post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’ll be honest and be the first to admit that I’m not above bribing my children. Whether it be good behavior, help around the house, or good grades, I’ve been known to reward them with cash or toys. I know not everyone will agree with my ways, but it’s proven to be effective for my household.
What is Learn & Earn?
I was recently introduced to Learn & Earn, a Hiperware Labs Inc app, that incorporates learning into digital play for elementary school kids. The app offers fun learning in math for grades 1st – 4th with quizzes that cover hundreds of skills. And with a 500,000+ strong questionnaire, it should keep my little learners busy — for a while!
The Learn & Earn app has been designed to adapt to each child’s learning curve, so that every child can improve steadily and at a pace they are comfortable with.
What does Learn & Earn do?
I’m sure we’ve all been there. We download all these “educational” apps for our children, but they would rather be building in Minecraft or zombie-hunting in Plants vs. Zombies. Unfortunately adding and subtracting just isn’t as rewarding as using a pick axe to mine for blocks.
Learn & Earn makes math rewarding by motivating kids to meet learning goals set by the parent to earn real rewards. Parents can use or delete rewards already in the system or add rewards using an Amazon link or ISBN. Having the option to add in different rewards allows the child to take ownership and feel more inclined to earn their reward.
In addition to choosing and adding rewards, the parents are in complete control of setting the rewards for time spent learning on the Learn & Earn app. When you first open the app, you setup the reward scheme for each child. For instance, “If my child does 10 minutes of math for 10 days, I’m willing to spend $10 in rewards.” Any of these values can be changed. For instance, “If my child does 10 minutes of math for 10 days, I’m willing to spend $20 in rewards.”
Drago, the app’s mascot, cheers your child on during math with gentle reminders. He also keeps tracks of goals and helps the child countdown to their reward. Once a goal has been met, the app initiates a purchase of the reward via Amazon.com and the parent is emailed to complete the purchase. No purchase can be made without the parent’s consent.
Why Does Learn & Earn Work?
Scientists have confirmed that children naturally get better at math or reading if theyβre willing to practice every day. Parents recognize that tablets can be a great educational medium with hundreds of apps available at the touch of a screen.
Each Grade has between 100 and 150 types of questions, all designed to meet or exceed the US Standard Core curriculum, organized into 20 to 30 Skills. Each Skill is associated with easy to identify icons designed for easy recall. You can work with your child to incorporate specific skills upfront as part of their reward or let your kids pick skills to practice on any given day.
Learn & Earn also fosters a bigger lesson – learning what it takes to earn what you want. By setting a goal and assigning a value to that goal, it can help children learn the value of money.
And since children have a short attention span, little 10 minutes sessions are easy for them to complete. The Learn & Earn app uses constant motivation to gradually improve and sustain attention spans β rewarding children for getting closer to time-goals or for working towards them.
Where is Learn & Earn Available?
Right now the Learn & Earn app is only available for the Apple iPad,Β but they do have plans to expand to Android devices soon.
How Much Does Learn & Earn Cost?
Learn & Earn is $39.99 per year, or $4.99 per month. Kids can use the app free until they earn a reward. This is a great way for you to see that the app is working and that your children are learning.
My youngest son has been using Learn & Earn for a couple of weeks now and he enjoys seeing how much closer he is getting to a reward. I started out small so that he could easily earn a reward and I’m gradually making it a little harder. Every time he sees the days count down, he has to come tell me.
I love that my son still feels like he’s “playing” on his iPad when he’s actually learning. As parents we have to make learning fun. Learn & Earn definitely helps me do that.
Do you use any learning apps? I’d love to add more to his iPad.

There are so many wonderful apps and programs out there to help encourage children to learn. It can really help with a child who is struggling – it makes learning a game and fun!
Stacie @ Divine Lifestyle says
That’s a really great idea. Math is such a hard subject to begin with, making it more appealing is always a good idea.
Amey Laud says
Thanks for your comment, Stacie. I like to say that many kids don’t like math because they’re not good at it and they’re not good at it because they don’t like it. So you often need an app like this to get out of this vicious cycle. The more kids use this app, even if they’re first motivated by the reward, they eventually start liking the math for its own sake.
If you are planning on downloading the app, I would love to have your feedback.

I am all about bribery, and my son has a thousand hot wheels and matchbox cars to show for it. This program looks like a much better option – thanks for the information. I’ll be looking into it for sure.
Melissa Pezza says
This is a great way to encourage kids to learn! So many kids just shut down when they’re having a hard time.
Amey Laud says
So true, Melissa. I’ve said in an earlier comment here, that many kids donβt like math because theyβre ‘not good at it’ and theyβre not good at it because ‘they donβt like it’. So you often need an app like this to get them out of ‘shut down’ mode as you refer to it. The more kids use this app, even if theyβre first motivated by the reward, they eventually start liking the math for its own sake.

It simply amazes me what can be learned using apps these days. Do I believe in rewarding children–I’m not sure but then I was the one always bribing my friends kids!
Liz Mays says
I can see how setting some incentives would make a big difference. I like that the kids can work towards a specific reward.
Amey Laud says
Liz,
I agree with your comment about working toward a specific reward. In fact, we have found among our users that kids that pick their own reward are >300% times likelier to actually achieve their goal compared to when parents restrict the reward selection to something of their own choice.

Chrystal | YUM eating says
Kiddo has really been struggling with math. I just downloaded a bunch of homeschool stuff I found on Pinterest and we finally had break through last night. We were all so happy! We try not to use electronics because she has some learning and attention issues that are magnified when she’s on a device. She tends to get more focused on the game part and not the learning part.
Amey Laud says
Chrystal,
Kids are increasingly conditioned to the idea that their devices are for entertainment and it becomes hard for parents to undo that. The statistic is that most educational apps are used either never, once, or twice (and rarely more than that). So the child’s motivation is usually the biggest yet under-emphasized issue with educational apps in general.

The app is free to use until kids earn their first reward. That’s the best way for parents to know that the app is worth their while (and for their kids, of course). A subscription covers up to 3 kids in a household.
