Once again I am blown away by what I was able to review. I was given the chance to review Smallville: The Complete Eighth Season. All I can is say that even after eight seasons now, I still get chills when I hear Remy Zero start up playing “Somebody Saaaaaaaave meeeeeee!”
In my opinion, the year before in season 7, I felt like the show was on the verge of something great. I felt that the series was still figuring out how far they wanted to take the Superman mythos. Season 8 by far, was the one that did it for me and it has become my favorite one as of yet.
In the beginning of this season, Lex Luthor is gone. Tess Mercer has stepped in for Lex’s business operation, Chloe is smarter than the average bear, Doomsday is coming, and Clark finally starts working at the Daily Planet. The story picks up after the events of last season’s finale which ignited a ton of new angles and story lines to be explored and fleshed out. This season showed that with a great hero, you are always going to have many different and interesting villains to keep him on his toes. The addition of Tess Mercer and Davis Bloome added to Clark’s struggles on several levels. The support of the Justice League in Clark’s life is here once again and are always captivating when working together. This season we also saw the appearance of many DC favorites like Plastique, Maxima, Toyman, The Persuader, and Zatanna. Comic fans were also treated to another DC “Golden Boy” in the form of Geoff Johns to write the mid-season episode “Legion”.
There’s a new reporter at the Daily Planet: Clark Kent, who shares a workspace with Lois Lane. There’s a new hero in Metropolis, too. No one knows who he is. But Jimmy Olsen was on the scene of one of the do-gooder’s exploits, and he snapped a blurred photo of the hero in superspeed action, a hero everyone now calls the Red-Blue Blur. Red-jacketed, blue-shirted Clark Kent draws closer to his Superman destiny in the exciting 22-episode, 6-disc Season 8 of Smallville. Another Kryptonian destiny also takes shape. Davis Bloome begins to realize he is Doomsday. His mission on Earth: kill Clark Kent. So many new events (will Jimmy and Chloe’s marriage last?), so many new faces (Tess Mercer, Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy among them!), so many state-of-the-art effects, so don’t miss a single thrill-packed moment!
If I had an actual “stamp of approval” it would be so plastered on this DVD set that you wouldn’t even be able to tell what it was. So in light of that I don’t really have one, I give it my verbal stamp. The only thing greater than Season 8 of Smallville is that it is going to be followed by Season 9!
