My kids and I are all about doing good and helping others out when we can. Although all three of my children will be homeschooling this year (someone send reinforcements!) we are still clipping ALL THE BOX TOPS for their local elementary school! With all the buying we are doing preparing for back to school we have been accumulating an abundance of Box Tops. Instead of storing them in a plastic baggie hanging on the refrigerator (not that I’ve done that before or anything), I made this Pencil Shaped Box Tops Collector to store them in until we have enough to turn in to the school.

Isn’t it cute? I just love the way it turned out. And thankfully it’s super easy and can be replicated with basic household supplies that you probably already have on hand. How’s that for easy?

Pencil Shaped Box Tops Collector

Materials:

• 2 empty toilet paper rolls
• different colored papers (I used pink, textured yellow, textured grey, and black & white polka dot)
• glue or hot glue
• tape
• paper cutter or scissors

Instructions:

To create the bottom for the collector, you will need to cut a circle out of the second empty toiler paper roll. Cut one toilet paper roll longways, lay flat, and place the other one on top of it. With a marker, pen, or pencil, trace a circle around the open end of the roll. With scissors, cut the circle out and adhere to one end of the other toilet paper roll with glue (or hot glue).

Put glue or hot glue around the end of the other toilet paper roll. Carefully place the cut out circle from the other toilet paper roll onto the glue to create a bottom for the Pencil Shaped Box Tops Collector.

Cut the yellow paper 3 inches thick and about 7 inches long. This will give it just a bit of overlap. If you don’t want that much, just trim it to the size you want. Wrap around the top (the open end) of the toilet paper roll and tape to secure.

Cut the pink paper about 3/4″ wide and 7 inches long. Wrap around the toiler paper roll at the closed end and tape to secure. I kept all the seams on one side so that it looked cleaner.

Cut the grey paper about 1/4 inch wide and 7 inches long. Wrap around toilet paper roll between the pink and yellow papers and tape to secure. Again, try to keep the seams all on one side for a cleaner look.

At this point it should really start to look like a pencil. The next step is to make the “lead” part of the pencil. Instead of using just a plain black or darker grey paper, I used a fun black & white polka dot paper. To make the “lead” I cut about a 3 1/8″ diameter circle from my pretty polka dot paper. I then cut about a 1 1/2 inch pie piece from the circle. By cutting the piece out of the circle, it will make creating a cone much easier.

You’ll need to create an opening for the Box Tops so that they can fit into the Pencil Shaped Box Tops Collector. To do this, use scissors or a craft knife to cut out a rectangular shape. Make sure it won’t be covered when you go to create the cone.

To create the cone for the “lead”, overlap the two ends of the circle. Do not tape until you know you have the proper size to fit around the top of the toilet paper roll. Once you have the right size, tape to secure.

Line the top of the open end of the toiler paper roll with glue or hot glue. Carefully place the “lead” cone over the top, align properly, and hold to secure.

I love this little Pencil Shaped Box Tops Collector SO MUCH! I want to make one for all the school-aged children in the neighborhood so they can be excited to fill it with Box Tops like my kids are.
