After leaving Marseille, I made my way to the medieval city of Carcassonne. Knowing I only had a few hours to explore this city, I left everything behind, only grabbing my camera, and headed out to explore. Within only minutes, I knew that a few hours wasn’t nearly long enough and that the medieval city of Carcassonne deserves a return visit. Hopefully soon.
According to information found on Wikipedia, the first signs of settlement in Carcassonne date all the way back to 3500 BC, but became identified when the Romans settled there around 100 BC. The fortified city consists of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans to prevent attack by siege engines, a device that is designed to break or circumvent city walls and other fortifications in siege warfare. The walls consists of towers that were built over a long period of time, as is evident by the differences in appearance and structure.
There was so much to see and do within the walls of this little city.
Everything about this little fortified city is breathtakingly beautiful.
These two feet did so much walking in France, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Experiencing the beautiful country on foot was tiring and treacherous at times, but having the opportunity to walk, feel and see everything firsthand was worth the calluses on the bottom on my feet.
If you are just now following my 10-day journey through France, you can catch up by seeing what I did in Nice, Aix en Provence, Marseille, and a general photo tour of the South of France.
Have you been to France? What is your favorite city, or the city you want to visit most if you’ve never been?

My European travel is limited to Spain. We didn’t see castles while there. I am amazed at how small the people are compared the towers. Those towers are HUGE!
