1-800-FLOWERS.com Summer of Smiles Giveaway
August 30, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways | 98 Comments
I’m teaming up with 1-800-FLOWERS.com on their mission to spread smiles across the nation. The emphasis is to encourage everyone to brighten someone’s day with thoughtful gifts and flowers, therefore calling it the “Summer of Smiles.” I was given the opportunity to participate in this campaign and decided to send my mom a smile with the Martha Stewart Sweet Pink Rose and Ivy arrangement. It’s not normally something I would send, but once I saw it, I loved the combination of the Ivy and Pink Roses.
I had it delivered to her office with a nice little card, but I forgot to include my name. Silly me…right? She called my dad thinking maybe he sent it, and when she found out he didn’t I’m sure she was a bit confused. They finally asked me if I was the one who sent them and the mystery was solved.
Since the flowers were delivered to her office, I had her take some pictures with her iPhone so I could see how they arrived.
Although they didn’t arrive looking like the picture, I think they are still so elegant and pretty. The blooming light pink rose signifies elegance and grace, while the stylish collar of variegated ivy is a symbol of friendship and a strong relationship. After reading what each part of the arrangement signified, I knew it was the perfect choice for my mother. I’m pretty sure that I brightened her day and made her smile…at least I hope I did.
And because I think smiles are just fabulous, I want to give one of you the opportunity to put a smile on someone’s face with a $50 1-800-FLOWERS.com gift card!

Strawberry Tea Kettle Giveaway
August 30, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways | 94 Comments
While I was in New York for BlogHer, I had the opportunity to talk with Jodi Reinman from the California Strawberry Commission. As I was talking with her, I started thinking about how cool it would be to work for my favorite fruit. I can imagine walking into the office and having an endless supply of strawberries within my reach at all times. To me, that would be the perfect job. I’m sure I haven’t imagined her job correctly, but right or wrong, working with strawberries has got to be a tasty job.
The California Strawberry Commission is extremely active in social media and they have just launched a free iPhone app called “strawberries” that includes 50 strawberry recipes from 50 bloggers. The next version will be launched in the fall and will include nutrition tips from dietitians and bloggers. They are also running a recipe contest right now and the winner will win a $250 Amazon Gift Card! Hurry up though because entry submissions end on August 31st.
Speaking of contest, you see that cute little strawberry tea kettle up there…one lucky reader will win one. It’s bright and colorful in a fun design with classic harvest colors and great detail. It has 2.5 Quart capacity and Plug-in harmonic whistle. You can find it at many national retailers for a suggested retail price of $29.99.

Babies travels the globe following 4 children from vastly different corners of the world in their first year of life, featuring babies from Namibia, Japan, Mongolia and the U.S. The documentary is a life-affirming and universal celebration of the innocence and magic of babies, proving that that if you surround a baby with love it doesn’t matter what culture you’re from or what child-rearing practices you follow.
This movie looks very interesting and I’m actually looking forward to seeing it. If you’ve already seen it, check out these exclusive videos from the DVD bonus content that checks in a couple years later on each infant in their hometowns:

EyeBuyDirect.com Eyewear Giveaway
August 25, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways | 59 Comments
Now that school is back in session and you’ve purchased everything that the kiddos need for the school year, it’s time to think about you and focus on your needs. I don’t currently need prescription eyewear nor does anyone in my household but I learned a surprising statistic that 70% of adults use some type of corrective lenses.
My dad has always worn glasses and/or contacts and I recently went with him to help him pick out a new pair of frames with his new lenses. I was astonished at how much the total package cost. He does need a pretty strong prescription but $800 is just crazy talk if you ask me. If you agree and don’t want to pay those high prices then maybe you should check out EyeBuyDirect.com.
As an online retailer and optical manufacturer, EyeBuyDirect is able to significantly reduce the costs passed on to the consumer by traditional retailers therefore leaving more dollars in your pocket. The team comprises of industry specialists who are not only customer focused, but who understand vision and your optical needs. Lenses are custom made according to your prescription and are inspected for accuracy and quality before shipping. But if some reason you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, you can return the product within 7 days for a full refund.
And because I adore being able to give back to all my amazing readers, one of you will win a new pair of prescription eyeglasses up to $100, frames + lenses.
Giveaway:
One (1) winner will get a free pair of prescription eyeglasses valued at up to $100 (frames + lenses)!

How to Balance Your Exposure to the Sun + Giveaway
August 24, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways, Skin Care | 82 Comments
This month, as part of the Skin FIRST Network, we are going to focus on balancing exposure to the sun. The sun’s warm rays provides us with vitamin D, a healthy outwards appearance, and sometimes that dreaded tan line, but the sun’s rays can also inflict damage over both the short-term as well as over the course of our lifetime. Although sunburns and sunstroke are the most evident signs of over-exposure to the sun, we also have to be aware of the cumulative effects of sun exposure over the course of our lifetimes. In fact, up to 80 percent of our lifetime sun exposure is reached by the age of 20. But as we get older, we have a naturally decreasing ability to repair the damage caused by sun exposure and we must take additional steps to properly maintain our skin as it becomes increasingly easier for it to burn, wrinkle and develop cancers.
Our skin is our largest organ and our first line of defense against infections and diseases. Over time, sun exposure can actually weaken our skin and suppress our immune systems. This leaves our bodies more vulnerable to both skin diseases like cancer as well as viruses that can take advantage of our sun-weakened skin.
Balancing Exposure to the Sun
While basking in the sun can feel replenishing and bring us a sense of both mental and physical renewal, the amount of vitamin D our bodies need on a daily basis can be absorbed in just the first 15 minutes of our exposure to the sun. Understanding the factors affecting our skin’s reaction to the sun can help us plan our time in the sun.
FACTOR #1 – SUNLIGHT
The strength of sunlight is the main factor for the quantity of UV radiation your skin can be exposed to. Latitude, altitude, time of day, season and cloud coverage can all have a dramatic effect on the sun’s impact on our skin. Even reflected sunlight from windows, pavement, water, snow and sand can raise the risk of overexposure.
FACTOR #2 – SKIN COLOR
As skin color is determined by the amount of melanin present in the skin, ethnicity can also play a large role in sun exposure. Often a result of a group’s distance from the equator (and its stronger sunlight), darker skins are more resistant to the effects of sunlight than fairer skins. African-Americans, for example, are 20 times less likely to develop melanoma than those with white skin. Conversely, one study found that African-American women aged 15 to 49 have more than 20 times the risk of vitamin D deficiency than Caucasians. Different skin colors will react to UV rays at different speeds. So one should be mindful of her skin’s susceptibilities when considering her exposure time or adding protection.
FACTOR #3 – SUNSCREEN
The strength of sunscreen is determined by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), a number that measures the amount of UV radiation required to sunburn with the sunscreen on, relative to the amount that would burn skin without it. For example, SPF-15 allows about 1/15 (about 6%) of the UV rays that would penetrate the skin without the sunscreen on. SPF-30 would allow 1/30 (about 3%) and so on.
With the end of summer almost upon us, many of us look for ways to make sure the sense of freedom and relaxation we find outdoors stays with us in the coming months. This makes August an ideal time to look for ways to enrich your whole self, physically and mentally and the folks at Eucerin want to help you do just that! The ALDI One Week Challenge Giveaway
August 23, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways | 164 Comments
As I was recently going over our budget and seeing where the majority of our money went, I was surprised to see how much we actually spent on groceries. When I was a stay-at-home I clipped coupons like a mad woman and saved our family tons of money. Now that I’m working, I simply don’t have that amount of time anymore and our budget is paying dearly for it. ALDI recently announced their “one week challenge” and I wanted to let you know about it. They are encouraging customers to shop ALDI for a week, shop the “other guy” for a week and then compare the savings between the two. Unfortunately for me there isn’t an ALDI in my area but hopefully you have one near you.
Did you know customers who typically shop traditional grocery stores can save up to $1,996.80, and those who shop big-box stores, save $998.40. Think of what you could do with the extra money each year! Through a select assortment and convenient grocery shopping approach, ALDI passes on savings to consumers with prices up to 50 percent below traditional supermarkets.
The last couple of years have been a time of growth for ALDI and since 2008 they have opened 100 new stores each year. I see they are in Texas, so hopefully they are thinking of opening a store close to me!
A little about ALDI:
ALDI has been a leader in the grocery store industry since 1976 and has more than 1,000 U.S. stores located in 31 states primarily from Kansas to the East Coast. In the spring of 2010, ALDI opened a new division in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. A select assortment discount grocer featuring its own ALDI select brands, ALDI applies smart and efficient operational and business practices to save more than 20 million monthly customers up to 50 percent on their grocery bill. ALDI named 2009 Retailer of the year by PL Buyer, sells more than 1,400 of the most frequently purchased grocery and household items in manageable, non-bulk packaging. For more information about ALDI, go to www.aldi.us.
Are you up for the one week challenge? If so, I’ve got some $25 gift cards to help you out with the challenge.
Giveaway:
Two (2) winners will receive a $25 ALDI gift card!
How to Enter:
Simply visit ALDI and leave me a comment below letting me know how you would spend your $25 gift card!

I’m Looking Forward to the Holidays at Sam’s Club + Giveaway
August 23, 2010 | Filed Under Giveaways | 194 Comments
This summer has been an absolute blast for me and I’ve done more traveling in these few short months than I’ve done my entire life. Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration but I’m sure you get my point.
As many of you know earlier this month I attended BlogHer in New York and the day I came home I had to leave again to head to Orlando to visit with the folks at Sam’s Club and attend their Holiday Meeting. I wanted to attend the meeting and meet with the Sam’s Club personnel because for as long as I can remember, we’ve shopped at Sam’s Club. I remember going with my parents and now my children tag along with me.
It’s hard to believe that school has already started and before you know it, it will be time to prepare for the holiday season. After learning about what is coming to Sam’s Club, it can’t get here fast enough.
I arrived in Orlando on Sunday night so I just headed to the hotel with Nikki, one of the PR reps. We stayed at a fairly new Hilton and the rooms were just beautiful. Once I got checked in and everything, it was time for a shower, a quick email check and a much needed call to my husband. I had never been away from my family this long before so this was really hard for me. I fell asleep pretty quickly and I was really excited that I got to sleep in and order room service before all the activities started the following day.
I had the opportunity to meet with Susan and Kristy, who work for Sam’s Club in PR, and their enthusiasm and love for their job truly shines through. In fact, at one point during my stay I remember saying to one of them that “everybody is so happy.” You see there were about 2,200 Sam’s Club employees that attended the Holiday Meeting and everyone was smiling, friendly and looked incredibly happy.
The Sam’s Club Holiday Meeting took place in the Orlando Convention Center and they had it set up to look like a Sam’s Club location. We had the opportunity of meeting the buyers for each department and learned more about what they look for in products they choose to put in Sam’s Club. Our first order of business for Monday was to take a look at the new toys and video games that will be hitting the clubs in time for the holiday shopping season and you can be assured they are trying very hard to only bring their members the best quality, best prices, and products that are sustainable and can be passed down. Just some teasers, but you can expect to finally see Melissa & Doug in Sam’s Club and you can expect to see some exceptional pricing. There will also be an exclusive Tonka Cement Mixer that can only be found at Sam’s Club. If you have a family of gamers like I do, you’ll be excited to know that there are some really awesome things coming that I can’t fill you in on right now, but just know – it’s gonna be good!
We then took a stroll through holiday decorating and Sam’s Club is totally bringing decorating to a whole new level. They are offering 4 different color themes and providing you with information on how to decorate your tree in any of the 4 themes for just $100! If you’re a little challenged in the decorating department like I am, this will really come in handy. One of the things that really stood out to me was the Sam’s Club is providing you with an exceptional value with smaller gifts such as teacher gifts or hostess gifts. You will be able to buy a variety of products in packs of 3 or 4 for right around $20! This will make gift giving a little easier on the checkbook, that is for sure.
Our next stop was the apparel department which I absolutely loved. I can’t wait for some of the items to hit the shelf. While looking at all the name brand clothing and deep discount offered by Sam’s Club, I began wondering how they could offer name brands at such a low price. So, I asked. Basically, because Sam’s Club has less overhead, they are able to offer the members really great prices. You can get the same quality name brand clothing at only a fraction of the cost. Now, that’s my kind of shopping.
The jewelry selection at Sam’s Club is quite impressive. The name brands such as Everlon and Judith Ripka are just a few that you’ll be able to find in the clubs. I got a sneak peek at some of the new products and all I can say is it’s fabulous, really fabulous!
I’ll be bringing you more information about what is hitting the shelves when I’m given the go ahead. If I could, I’d totally share it all with you now but you wouldn’t be able to find it in the clubs yet. But, since I can’t give you details yet…how about a gift card giveaway?

One (1) winner will receive a $25 Sam’s Club Gift Card!

Simply leave me a comment below letting me know what you usually purchase when you shop at Sam’s Club!
